Where to go in Wales?

DD and are in desperate need of a few days away. We would love to visit Wales. I was thinking Newport as that's where the train gets in. Would you recommend it for a few days away? My friend just said they are willing to drive us to Wales so I am not restricted to just Newport. Is there anywhere you would recommend for some lazy on the beach, small shops and some history please? Thank you so much :)

Definitely not Newport, its very dreary.
Head on down to West Wales, Tenby is glorious, beautiful seaside town.

Sbbhnfc · 11/04/2022 12:10

Not sure Newport is exactly a holiday destination, it's a bit grim to be honest (we live in Somerset and other half occasionally does shifts in that neck of the woods) though you can get from there to lots of other places.

What about Swansea, or even Cardiff? (Personally I like Pembrokeshire and North Wales, but they're a bit further away; although if you REALLY want to experience travelling to the Back of Beyond, there's Aberystwyth - lovely when you get there, but lord, does it take a long time!!) You might find a lot of places are booked for Easter though, we were in Wales a couple of weeks ago and we really struggled to find somewhere at a reasonable cost even then.

Jovanka · 11/04/2022 12:11

God no, not Newport. I would head to the Gower or if you want to be town-based then yes Tenby is a good shout.

devildeepbluesea · 11/04/2022 12:13

I’m a patriotic Welsh woman and I’d never recommend Newport! Unless you mean Newport Pembs.

Cardiff is a cracking place for a short break. Compact city, plenty to do and a short train ride from Barry or Penarth if you want beaches.

justaweeone · 11/04/2022 12:16

Cardiff, on route there now to see Dd who went to uni there and never came home!
Days out you can get to Barry Island, Penarth etc.
Love Cardiff!

mariebaby3 · 11/04/2022 12:20

Def not Newport!

I would recommend Pembrokeshire - Tenby etc or you can stay in Swansea if you want somewhere local to get off at the station and visit the Gower. The whole of the Gower is beautiful and you also have mumbles which is a bit more local to Swansea with great restaurants, pubs, shops etc.

Houseplantmad · 11/04/2022 12:30

Head for the Gower coast. Caswell. Bay is gorgeous as are other local beaches. Cheap chalets for rent close to the beach. Local buses and train to Swansea.

Patchbatch · 11/04/2022 12:31

Cripes no not Newport. It depends what you really want to do- I absolutely love Cardiff so I'd probably go to Cardiff and then hope on the train to see the coast one day as well.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 11/04/2022 12:32

Cardiff
Swansea and then on to the Gower
Tenby and saundersfoot
Brecon Beacons
Newport Pembroke, cardigan and Mwnt

And they are all in the south or west

JellyNo15 · 11/04/2022 12:35

Gosh, wouldn't recommend Newport for a relaxing break. I live near Tenby and it is beautiful and has everything you listed. How old is your DD? There is the amazing Folly Farm a taxi ride away. Also Manor House Zoo and Heatherton.

bonfireheart · 11/04/2022 12:35

Thank you so so much, don't know why I didn't think of Cardiff, doh! Tenby also sounds lovely. So glad I asked or I'd be stuck in Newport :)

Cardiff is much nicer than Newport and only an extra 15 mins on the train.

Yes, which Newport is important! There's a lovely one and a stabby one. Beaches tend to get nicer the further west you go, but if you don't want to spend too long travelling I think Cardiff/Penarth cover what you're after.

fruitpastille · 11/04/2022 12:37

St David's is lovely.

TomAllenWife · 11/04/2022 12:59

Newport Pembrokeshire is lovely
Newport Gwent is a shit hole

Loads to do in Cardiff if you're not driving
I personally wouldn't want to be down West Wales with no car

missmartha · 11/04/2022 13:35

Newport is the grimmest place on the planet. Cardiff is just a short journey away and a great place for a holiday.

If you want a beach holiday the Gower is fab as is Tenby and if you want to do a bit of walking try the Brecon Beacons.

There are some lovely places in Wales.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 11/04/2022 13:47

What about up and coming Merthyr Tydfil?

Tickledtrout · 11/04/2022 13:49

Definitely Swansea- try and stay near the water and hire a bike to cycle to Mumbles. Get the bus onto Gower

Sn0tnose · 11/04/2022 15:06

Tenby is absolutely gorgeous. If you choose that, do try to get over to Folly Farm. It’s very easy to do by bus.

Cardiff is a lovely base for the weekend. It’s a really nice city and plenty to do.

Porthcawl is quite a nice little place as well. It’s not Tenby, by any stretch of the imagination, but closer to Cardiff and nice for a day by the beach. It doesn’t have a train station so if you based yourself in Cardiff you’d need to get the train to Bridgend, walk down the hill and through town to the bus station then get the bus to Porthcawl.

Squiff70 · 11/04/2022 15:11

Last summer we stayed in Penarth and got the bus into Cardiff. After a full day in Penarth there's naff all else to do there and wherever you go there's a RIDICULOUSLY steep hill through a park. Penarth beach isn't sandy either - it's all rocks so not ideal if you want to cabbage on a beach towel and paddle in the sea. We unwittingly took a bucket and spade for our little one and they came home unused :(

Cardiff City Centre was a blast. We spent ages in Hamleys toy shop, spent far too much in Crispy Creme and wasted a wet afternoon in Costa, but our memories of the trip are very sweet and despite only being there for a few days, I had the post-holiday blues for ages after coming home.

CraftyGin · 11/04/2022 15:20

Gower is on Escape to the Country right now.

It's very close to Swansea so easy to get to on public transport.

a stabby one

Haha 😂 😂
My brother and aunt and uncle all live in Newport (Gwent) and all the descriptions here are making me LOL! All so true

OP Cardiff is great for a couple of days away, am sure you'd have a lovely time there.

simonthedog · 11/04/2022 20:00

Swansea and the Gower. The buses are free from Good Friday for 10 days. Something they often do in the holidays recently.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/04/2022 20:20

Grin My favourite Newport story for you all.
