Does anyone day dream in alot of detail / act their day dream?

I do this day dream thing where if i am alone I will literally say the conversation (my part) out loud and kind of act it out. I can day dream for ages at a time like an hour or so. It feels really intense too in the sense of I really feel whatever emotion I'm feeling in that particular situation. I will pick up where I left off in my next session of day dreaming. It's all quite detailed anc there's a "storyline" going on.

My day dreams can be about anything but usually things are way way better in my daydream and I'm a way better version of myself!

I don't do it everyday. Just now and again but in bouts. I have also noticed I do it alot more when I'm down. Not sure if that's because I go into myself more when I'm down and in my thoughts iyswim. I have done this since I was a child.

I realise this sounds utterly looney but I'm honestly pretty "normal" otherwise and wondered if anyone else does anything similar.

It's called maladaptive daydreaming.

I don't, developed in childhood as a coping mechanism and it's been a source of comfort ever since. I have several elaborate worlds/stories that i can dip into depending on what I need from it at any particular time, some of them are decades old and have evolved over time. I go lie on the bed for a half hour daydream in the same way that other people will go lie down for a half hour nap, it's my way of mentally refreshing myself and shutting off the world for a bit.

It's one of those things that can be unhealthy if not kept in check but so long as its not taking over your life then crack on.

I don't should say "I do it", bloody typo

I’ve been day dreaming like this since I was a teen. I don’t do anything verbally but I do come up with storylines that I continue when I have the chance. And yes they are featuring a better version of me 😂

Omg Hospedia I seriously was not expecting someone to say there's a name for it! I thought I was the only weirdo! Haha.

You know now that you mention coping mechanism as a child I think that's what happened to me. I clearly remember it started when I was 8 and I had to leave the family home and live with my aunt on my own and I was getting bullied at school at the same time. I had noone I could talk to so talked to people in my head instead.

Omg is this more of a mental health thing and not just some quirk? I'm off to Google. Thank you.

I think I did this as a child, I had very elaborate imaginative worlds / daydreams and I definitely remember speaking my part out loud.

As an adult if I'm daydreaming I sort of mumble or mutter out loud and often DH will comment that I'm talking to myself again, which drives me mad. Leave me alone to get on with it!
