Holiday in Europe for 3 x 17 year olds

DD and her two best mates have been hoping to get away for 5 days at the end of summer term (first year A levels). She and one of the girls are 18 in September and they're all very capable.

Unfortunately after a few weeks of trying they've been unable to find anyone that will take them.

Does anyone know of any resorts that would? They're not too fussy where so long as there's a beach and the weather is likely to be good. They just want to chill out on the beach really.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be eternally grateful as I'm getting a bit sick of the whinging from DD about lack of holiday.

I have a week away booked in the UK later in the summer which she is more than welcome to join me on but apparently 'it's boring and the weather will be crap' 🙄.

One of them needs to be 18 to be ‘ in charge’ of the booking.

That's what I thought.

It appears that youth hostels would take them but no-one, parents or teens, is particularly keen on that idea.

It’s because a contract can’t be enforced with a minor (under 18) and package holidays are contractable. It might be worth them looking at STA.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/04/2022 19:40

Sorry, I mean a company like STA (as STA went bust a while ago).

HomeprideSaucy · 10/04/2022 19:46

You can't even book a Premier Inn or equivalent in this country unless you're 18.
I don't know about elsewhere in Europe but I wouldn't expect to be able to buy a package holiday with a British company.

A hostel + flights might work, or a parent that's willing to go with them and then ignore them when they're there.

(Equally they can't even stay overnight even if they're looking at a Uni at at the other end of the country. But aged 17 many of them have to sign the paperwork to borrow thousands of pounds of student loan 🤷‍♀️)

We had this with our dd , all packed need a card for the booking and me and dh weren't prepared to be the one who's card it was . No one else offered either so they didn't go ! I trust them all but they are teens !

BigSandyBalls2015 · 10/04/2022 19:57

Some hostels are very nice so don’t rule this out. Look into it. DD inter railed round europe at 17 and I was amazed at some of the hostels.

LaTomatina · 10/04/2022 19:57

We have had Airbnb guests who were small groups of 17 year olds, usually booked through a parent 's account but traveling by themselves.

Also as PP mentioned, why not hostels? I stayed in hostels at age 16/17 with my pals when we were still at school, going to concerts and university open days. OK that was in the 1990s, but I am pretty sure it's still possible?

LaTomatina · 10/04/2022 19:59

And hostels are amazing compared to the 1990s! Private rooms, ensuites etc are normal now!!!

LaTomatina · 10/04/2022 20:00

For example, check some of the big European chains -eg: St Christopher's, Stay Okay, Plus or Wombats. Very safe, friendly and comfortable.

Yeah I must admit I've had a quick look at hostels and some of them seem pretty good.

Will look at Air B & B.

@gunnersgold she hasn't actually sorted her passport out yet.

Honestly it's a pain in the arse. All her friends are having family holidays overseas, her dad is off to Italy with his GF, and I think she's angling for me to change my plans so we can go abroad, but tbh I'm really looking forward to my week in a little cottage in the arse end of the Dales.

She's also going to Reading Festival with her mates in August and I'm taking her away for the weekend for her 18th (in the UK...she was given options and this is what she picked, prior to this trip all going south), and planning a special holiday post A levels/pre Uni next year.

I get that the lack of sunny beach option is a bit tedious for her but she's not exactly hard done by!

Maybe they need to look at hostels again which seem to be a lot posher than I remember www.hostelworld.com/accommodation/area/Andalucia/Spain - checked and there are ones with pools. 16-17 year olds just need a letter of authorisation from their DPs - will point DS 16 this way of he fancies going away without us.

OrangeIsNotTheOnlyColour · 10/04/2022 20:24

Thanks @rookiemere

The one I saw was on hostelworld too.

Mykonos, right on the beach, great reviews and they could have a 3 person private room with ensuite for just about £25 a night each.
