Turning of electricity at 10pm

Anyone heard about this boycott thing. Where people are turning of the electricity at 10pm tonight. Apparently if as many people do it as possible it will effect the grid. And might make them do somthing about the cost.

Can anyone explain it? I can't see it doing anything Confused

There's another thread somewhere about this. I'll try to find it.

misstalk · 10/04/2022 16:02

Yes it's all over social media. The way things are going I'm willing to give it a go we have nothing to lose at this point so at 10pm everything be off in my house for 10 minutes. Worth a try

People's attitudes and habits around electricity need to change.

No more running a clothes washer several times a day.
Dump the dishwasher.
Electric heating needs doing away with.
Etc.

Unfortunately, government.have pushed for electric cars... So everyone's you g to be paying a fortune to electric producers one way or another.

TulipsGarden · 10/04/2022 16:09

There's another thread on this. It sounds completely pointless to me, most people aren't using much electricity at 10pm and why would it matter if we all switched it off anyway. It'll go back on 10 minutes later, it's not long enough to make any difference to anything.

Crinkle77 · 10/04/2022 16:15

Dump the dishwasher

Dishwashers might actually be more efficient than hand washing. Obvs you'd need to make sure it was full and stacked properly.

As I said on the other thread I’m going out out tonight so I hope the pub are not doing this. Angry

Hand washing uses electric?

I didn't know that

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/04/2022 16:46

I just cannot see how it will make any difference. Turning off the telly, lights and router for ten minutes will save a few pence. People will leave fridges on, run the dishwasher earlier etc.

Octomore · 10/04/2022 16:49

Hand washing uses electric?

It uses hot water, which you have to heat somehow (gas/electric etc.)

10pm seems a silly time to do this. What do most people have turned on at 10pm? Most houses just have a fridge freezer, a few lights, and maybe the TV on then.

PaperMonster · 10/04/2022 17:36

Wondering how I’d heat my house without electricity?

I don't think a house would freeze in 10 mins.

Some people can't afford their heating to be on at all .

I mat have misunderstood your post

I can’t see how it will do anything or enough people will do it to cause a surge that’s an issue for the grid. The grid is used to millions of people watching something on television and then putting their kettles on for a cup of tea without an issue. Even if it does cause damage to the grid, why would people want that?

Soubriquet · 10/04/2022 18:20

We are all in bed by 10 pm anyway so I won’t be doing it…as I won’t be awake again at 11 to turn it back on!

alwayslatte · 10/04/2022 18:21

Goodness me, no thanks! That's about our busiest time with car on charge, washing machine and dishwasher on for cheap rate electricity. Plus lighting. Definitely not.

PaperMonster · 10/04/2022 21:26

A poster had said to do away with electric heating. We Live rurally where there’s no gas.
