Got followed tripped over, bag stole, everything gone.
Police were called but couldn't do much.
I'm physically ok just very shocked

Anyone awake for a hand hold?

Im so sorry that happened to you. I'm sure you are feeling very vulnerable now. Have you been able to stop your bank cards etc?

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 04:13

yes, but they have made it really difficult to order new ones as wanted to know all sorts of details such as credit limit, last spend etc which I didn't know.

I have no phone no cards etc and its just hit me that I was actually assaulted (tripped over and my friend tripped over too although they didn't snatch her bag just mine)

There's nothing I can do really apart from just accept it's happened but it's just kind of hit me as at first I was in too much shock to really process it.

Sorry for what you’ve gone through, sounds horrendous! Hope you feel better soon and they catch the scum that this Flowers

ArcheryAnnie · 10/04/2022 04:15

That's horrible, I'm so sorry.

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 04:18

Thank you. I just need to accept it's happened I suppose but it's the shock and I had had a lovely night out with my friend. We were followed from the tram stop by a gang.

LoveSpringDaffs · 10/04/2022 04:24

(((HUG)))

Is there someone in the house with you? Do you feel safe.

I'm so sorry this happened to you.

I know it's an 'old fashioned' thing to say, but it does help, have a hot sweet drink. It'll help with the shock. Stay/get warm & comfortable.

Ring the police in the morning. Depending on where you were there should be either CCTV, or recording's from ring doorbells etc, little bastards are probably 'known' to the police.

I'm glad your 'physically' ok, but mentally you need to really look after yourself 💐

Bemoreatticus · 10/04/2022 04:25

Sounds like you will get the practical stuff sorted but the trauma will take a while to process. Maybe distract yourself for now with some tv. Eventually you will find yourself nodding off. The police should have offered you a chance to be contacted by victim support.

WaveParticleDuality · 10/04/2022 04:36

I'm here!

I often think about something like that happening, and in my head I go full-on kung-fu master, and the assailants run off, humbled by my mastery of the physical.

Obviously, should it ever happen, the reality would be me handing over everything whilst cowering and pleading 'don't touch the face'.

So you're in a better state than me and my cognitive dissonance would be!

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 04:37

Thanks for everyone's support. The police brought me home and my husband is here but understandably asleep at this time as this all happened a few hours ago and whilst he's been supportive he can't stay awake all night just because I can't sleep.

The police were ok but said they'd have to contact me to take statement in a few days as I'd had a few drinks out (not loads, but they have their procedures and cannot take statements if you are intoxicated etc. )

I will try the hot drink suggestion, thanks.

To be honest it happened so fast even a kung fu expert would have struggled. Literallly bag snatched off my shoulder and they ran off. just one of those things i guess, and in time the shock will fade. I just never in a million years would have expected this to happen to me but then again does anyone?

I’m sorry OP. It’s such a violation having your whole bag stolen, and the fact you were pushed over as well. You must have been so shocking and just thinking what the heck is happening??
I hope the warm sweet drink settles your nerves.

WaveParticleDuality · 10/04/2022 04:44

Whilst a bit of a cliché, a cup of tea is a great panacea. I think much of it is in the making of it and engaging in a well-worn ritual, it's the making of the tea and anticipation of a 'nice sit down' that's very calming. A cuppa will never let you down!

Just get comfortable, process what's happened, and speak to the police tomorrow.

It's a very rubbish end to a night out. But you're here, you're in one piece, and you're having that bloody lovely cup of tea.

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 04:51

Thanks, I think the hassle of having multiple card companies wanting loads of information to send new cards etc when I was still in shock got to me but they've stopped them all now at least

Saw where the little bastards had gone with the phone and the police went to see if they could recover it but no joy. I just hope they haven't used the contactless cards to go on a spree but I guess I'll be covered for that as the crime was immediately reported.? Theyre all blocked now.

OP posts:
TortolaParadise · 10/04/2022 04:53

Big hug.

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 04:53

Thanks for the support everyone . I'll try and get some rest and hopefully in the morning things will feel a bit more manageable. At least I can have a chill out sunday.

OP posts:
WaveParticleDuality · 10/04/2022 04:55

Yes, and spending will be refunded by your bank.

Still shit though!

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 07:28

Update the police have contacted us to say they've recovered CCTV of the incident so if the little shits are known them they may be able to identify them... gives me hope!

Feeling a little better this morning

OP posts:
demotedreally · 10/04/2022 07:32

Poor you op, sounds awful.
Welldone for getting a bit ofrest

Ask for a referral to victim support. How is your friend?

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 07:36

I'll check on her later - she was holding her bag so I think that's why they went for mine as it was a shoulder bag with a long handle so easy peasy to make off with.

I'm going to have a chilled day and my mum is coming over, it will all be alright. The police did mention victim support but as i had been drinking they just checked I was ok and said they'd be intouch with more details . What do victim support do, is it like a counselling /welfare line?

OP posts:
Livebythecoast · 10/04/2022 08:13

Oh OP, how terrifying for you. I'm sorry this happened to you.
Yes, victim support can help you process what happened and offer counselling. Victims of crime can sometimes think it's their fault or were personally targeted but you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and it could have happened to anyone.
I hope they catch whoever did this.
You've had a nasty shock so look after yourself and get support from those around you. Flowers

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 08:32

update - the purse has been found dumped in the street and put on a facebook page. Amazingly, someone in australia who used to live here saw it and messaged me randomly on linked in as I'm not on that facebook group, it was not in my area. She must have searched me on linked in.
The cards are cancelled but at least I will get one of my possessions back even if police need them for forensics at first.

OP posts:
MayMorris · 10/04/2022 08:57

I’m glad someone has traced you and reunited your bag….it hopefully counters the thugs with this Australian who showed you such empathy in doing on line searchers. Focus on that, how good and generous people who don’t know you are.
Any sign of your phone? That’s more of a pain than the cards in many ways!

I will just say, do ensure your DH is supporting you properly and realises how shocked you are….it sounds like you are going out of your way a bit to not lean on him or expect much from him. Comments like your mum is coming over so it will be ok, seem a little like you don’t see him as your safety net?

gamerchick · 10/04/2022 09:01

You need to brick your phone so they can't do anything with it.

Take it easy today, hunker down and concentrate on feeling safe. It's a horrible thing to happen.

Metabigot · 10/04/2022 09:30

The phone is blocked, but insured. I'll write it off now. Meanwhile the EE centre can do an instant sim to put in an old phone whilst I await the new one on insurance, will go there today.

Yes, amazing that a random aussie thought to do a search for me , and how kind of her to bother! otherwise no one in this little group local to the area it was lost in which was near my friend would have had a clue who I was! My friend wasn't in it.

Husband is very snoozy as he was up to 3 ish with me so I can't say he was not supportive he's just tired. He'll drive me to the EE store later as I'm not sure I want to drive today so I'll let him rest for now - hopefully I can 'nearly' get things back to normal in a short time (in terms of the phone, wallet etc) and then await the replacement cards. I'm already feeling better that the purse is found as its the loss of meaningful items like a favourite purse that sting. Things like phones and cards can be replaced more easily albeit a hassle to wait for.

Thanks for everyone's support my head was in a bit of a state last night as I was still a bit drunk and couldn't process it but in the light of day it seems a lot better.

OP posts:
katscamel · 10/04/2022 11:52

I know this is a bit late but am in a different time zone.
Unfortunately I went through something similar several years ok but was living in a different country. It is a horribke thing to happen and it will take a while for you to calm down and start feeling 'normal' again. I had to go through the process of telling the police what was in my bag and the value of everything....I can actually laugh about it now as I was even asked to put a value on my hairbrush.

The only advice I can give you is take it easy for now, self-care is very important, and don't be surprised if you get very emotional in the next few days.... put it down to delayed shock.
