Help, can you OD on deep heat spray?

DM, I’m her full time carer (severe mental health issues) and struggling . She’s been complaining of back pain all day long, I’ve spoken to 111, I’ve spoken to her carers . They’ve been giving her voltarol gel and paracetomal . OOH/111 said add in diazepam, she’s had 6mg today, cocodamol and heat/cold . She’s still complaining of being in agony .

I’ve given her deep heat spray three or four times since half 3, liberally - I’m now slightly panicking that I’ve overdosed her . Stinks to high heaven (the spray) . I stupidly after spraying it on - and her still complaining 45 mins later - stuck a bag of frozen peas on it too .

She’s still complaining, pacing the floor, diazepam isn’t touching the sides (agitated) and I’m concerned I’ve possibly OD’d her on deep heat . I’m a worrier and once I get something in my head it sticks . Google isn’t helping in this case ! I’m not sure what to do, I’ve spoke to a GP twice today who’s said she needs to go to bed basically - but can’t settle her .

Can you OD on deep heat or am I just very anxious and latching onto things?

FWIW OOH don’t think there’s a physical issue, GP’s ruled out most things - or I’d be taking her to AA&E by this point - its been going on months, it’s just worse this weekend .

Hi OP, I don't know the answer but I get the worry. Something I would latch on to too, so just bumping for you.

Also, my grandad has been complaining of back pain and has just been giving antibiotics for a kidney infection. Could this be possible for your mum? Hope you both get some rest tonight.

Hisea · 09/04/2022 22:40

If it was possible to overdose I would imagine this would be clearly stated on all packaging and you'd have found a result for this by now on google

If you are really concerned call 111

ItsTheTreasure · 09/04/2022 22:40

Sorry, I didn't see your second post while I was typing.

I really don't think 4 doses of deep heat would do any harm. I've been using it liberally for my bad back all week. I think all it does is give a warming sensation.

Hellocatshome · 09/04/2022 23:29

I dont think you can unless you start drinking the stuff. Have they ruled out kidney stones?

3luckystars · 09/04/2022 23:31

I don’t think so.

Could her hip be broken? Sometimes it can happen without a fall.
My mother had lydocaine patches for shingles and they really helped with bad nerve pain when nothing else worked. I’m so sorry, don’t be hard on yourself for being anxious, you are doing a tough job and are exhausted.

If it's got worse she should be seen. Take her to A and E.

I don’t know re hip fracture . She had an unwitnessed fall about three weeks ago getting out of the shower - I found her sitting on the floor - might be even longer ago than that tbh - but she got up fine after, there was a bit of bruising around top of her bum and a bit of a lump in her back where she’d landed but that went down . GP said at the time she wasn’t at all concerned and that the lump would probably go down by itself, which it has and bruising is all gone .

She’s only 55 though, would a fall like that cause a fractured hip in someone that she? I don’t know .

She’s been complaining of back pain for months now, her back is very tight when I press it - like in spasm . It’s so difficult to know.

They’ve definitely ruled out kidney stones, UTIs etc .

Oh God I’m now in a panic that she’s fractured her back and I’m making her walk around on it.

We’re 30 miles from A&E and about £130 in taxis (£65-70 there and back) so I don’t know .

I hope she hasn’t fractured her hip, surely I’d have known? She got up absolutely fine when she fell .

I didn’t take her to A&E that day as she got up absolutely fine and mobilised with no issue at all .

If you could overdose on deep heat my mother would have done it by now hundreds of times, so please put that out of your mind.

Can you call her surgery and get someone out to her? It sounds like she’s getting worse and needs another assessment

3luckystars · 10/04/2022 05:48

You could also get an ambulance if she is in that much pain. All the best.

MagneticRubberDucks · 10/04/2022 05:57

You cannot overdose on deep heat.

They recommend you only use it a few times within a 24 hour period because it can cause skin irritation, that’s all.

If deep heat did help get a hot water bottle or a wheat bag.

If she’s been complaining about it for months it’s unlikely to be anything to do with the fall, the fall probably just made it worse due to swelling/bruising.

Has she tried doing any stretching/exercises to relieve it at all?

3luckystars · 10/04/2022 08:41

She is very young and you must be too. Sounds like hard work. Do you think you could afford a physiotherapist?

HollowTalk · 10/04/2022 08:45

So no one has actually seen her? Is there an out of hours clinic near you or a walk-in clinic?
