Marine Le Pen

Vegansausageroll · 09/04/2022 11:06

Is anyone else concerned that far right Marine Le Pen is looking a distinct contender for French President? Having a Putin supporter in power in France could lead to untold issues. A worrying trend of far right politics in Europe is on the rise once again, I think it will just add to the instability going forward at a time when Europe desperately needs a strong and united front.

@Roselilly36

Macron is the pits, Le Pen owns 6 Bengal cats, I doubt she will be worse tbh.
Knew there was something wrong with her, but six cats is really pushing it.
Viviennemary · 09/04/2022 18:13

I think its up to the French who they elect. Its none of our business.

When's that ever stopped us from talking about things?

Le Pen appeals to the French equivalent of the red wall that turned blue, the shopkeeper the "white van man"
Macron is for Paris and the elites the intellectuals and public sector, he doesn't understand ordinary working rural towns and small businesses and sole traders and farmers he is seen as Paris centred
Paris is not France just like London is not the UK
like in UK people may vote for someone they dislike but they won't vote for someone they believe dislikes them,

Whelmed · 09/04/2022 18:28

Apparently they've not had a two term president for quite a while now so I'd think it's likely she's getting her turn.

FOJN · 09/04/2022 18:33

I don't have a vote so my opinion isn't going to affect the outcome but I have every right to discuss international politics anyway. The French electorate will decide who their president is but I think who's in charge on the other side of the channel is very much our business.

Frenchfancy · 09/04/2022 18:34

Le Pen is very much pro Putin. Her manifesto had hidden in the depths the fact that she wanted to leave NATO and make an alliance.

You have to bear in mind that a few weeks ago it looked like Zemmour might get through to the second round and that would be far worse than Le Pen believe it or not. Most of the effort over the last few weeks has been put into discrediting him. From tomorrow, if the results are as expected, then the gloves will be off

Le Pen's policies simply do not add up, Macron's do. Every poll over the last 6 months have shown him with a clear lead. That lead has been reduced over the past few weeks because he has been a bit occupied with other events, but the lead is still there and all polls (thankfully) show that he will win the second round.

Frenchfancy · 09/04/2022 18:34

That should have read leave NATO and make an alliance with Russia.

queenofarles · 09/04/2022 18:36

That’s because Hollande was very unpopular , practically no one remembers him.

Miss, miss, I do! I remember him for his moped ride through Paris to see his mistress Julie Gayet. Oh the decadence of it all....
Crankley · 09/04/2022 18:46

I'm hoping to see Macron lose. Looking forward to tomorrows results.

Palloom · 09/04/2022 18:50

If LePen gets through, Europe will have Victor Orban, and her. US in due course will have Trump, and unless someone does a number on him we will still have Putin in Russia. I am sure there are others.

The rise of the right is something to fear and it is happening slowly but surely.

Macron FTW.

tobee · 09/04/2022 19:00

There's this threat every election from either her or her dad for as long as I can remember. It's never yet materialised as more than that yet. Let's hope that doesn't change.

Very much wtf at support for her on this thread.

Gilead · 09/04/2022 19:01

Nationalism is always considered to be politically right wing so it's a convenient stick to beat Le Pen with. People become so focussed on this that they neglect the economic element which as you say is quite socialist and always has been for Le Pen. I'm relieved to see the National Rally manifesto is very tame compared to 2017, although I wouldn't feel particularly easy about Le Pen winning the election
You’re calling them conservative; when we start calling far right candidates, and she is, she’s watered the manifesto slightly; we are in danger.

Don't say Trump again even in fun. Hopefully msm talking about him again is down to them being bored.

@Crankley - is that you Jayda?

NoraLuka · 09/04/2022 19:09

I don't think Le Pen will win but it's possible and I'm a lot less sure about that than I was a few weeks ago and it's quite scary tbh.

Macron has the "McKinsey affair" issue which has been picked up by the media over the past couple of weeks. I'm not sure how much anyone cares about that, but if you just look at the headlines it's easy to think Macron = millions paid to a US company which hasn't paid tax and it can't be good for his campaign.

Palloom · 09/04/2022 19:09

@tobee

I wish I was speaking in jest. Joe Biden is not doing well, haven't heard a peep from Kamala Harris, who would be the Democrat front runner I'd imagine next time out.

The right in America want revenge for Trump's loss. Even if it isn't him, I reckon it will be a landslide Republican victory for someone like him.

Anyway back to the French elections......

Frenchfancy · 09/04/2022 19:11

I am truly baffled as to why, given the current circumstances, anyone would want Macron to lose. The 3 alternatives are all in Putin's pocket and France is afterall only 26 miles from the UK.

tobee · 09/04/2022 19:12

Well let's hope, at the very, very least, not completely like him, ie a complete narcissist @Palloom

tobee · 09/04/2022 19:12

@Frenchfancy

I agree 100%. I can’t fathom why anyone would want MLP to be France’s representative in the world. How can that be the face of France that they want to project? It’s beyond me.
