I want to start by saying I've seen our doctor. I've seen several at our surgery. Spoken to 111 on a number of occasions and had 2 trips to a&e.

I'm not sure if everything is related but I'll put it all here to see if anyone can spread any light.

DD is 1 this week.

She wakes a lot at night. She can do 3-4 hour stretches but often wakes a matter of minutes after being put in the cot asleep (rocked or fed to sleep). When she wakes she's instantly screaming, she goes from asleep to 10/10 wailing. When one of us picks her up she if often inconsolable even though we go straight to her, she's never left to cry more than a minute or so.

She is often arching her back and very stiff, seems possibly uncomfortable? Maybe in pain? It's very hard to tell. .

Last night I fed her to sleep put her in the cot asleep. She woke 3x in less than a minute each time. Eventually she did stay asleep for 35 mins. Then between 830 & 930 she went to sleep relatively easily. Went into the cot easily but woke again within 3-5 mins repeatedly for the hour.

She then slept for 1.20 had a feed went back into the cot easily and slept 4.5hrs.

Does this kind of waking seem normal?

I'd like opinions before I mention what the doctors have said. Mainly because we've seen about 10 different doctors and in the end of one them went with something I suggested it could be. Everyone seemed to give me a different response. It's been very frustrating and now I'm wondering if it's just normal? Her personality?

I should mention sometimes I can feed her for 5-20 mins put her in the cot, gentle pat her back and she'll stay happily asleep.

Does it ever happen in the daytime? If not I'm going to suggest teething pain. Always worse when laying down as blood flow is increased to the area. Only thing that really helps is ibuprofen and anbesol liquid.

Sorry if you've already disproved this. Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Tummyache? Earache? She is just at the age where they get ear ache with teething.

Your child doesn't need to have all the symptoms. I eliminated all dairy products with the recommendation from my gp. By a week or two I had what felt like a new baby.

Sometimes, not as frequently but we have days where she's really unhappy, and no amount of cuddles etc helps.

After a sickness bug(?) where she was sick all night 8-12 times over 12 hours. Followed by diarrhoea for several days. We ended up in a&e with dehydration. The consultant recommended we go dairy free. We did a month which didn't make any difference. If anything I felt it was then that these night episodes got worse and more frequent.

Beginning of December last year 12 hour sickness bug. Followed by diarrhoea.

Saw gp, they advised ear infection. Gave antibiotics. Bad diarrhoea for 10 days. Ended up in a&e with dehydration.

January another 12 hours sickness bug followed by some days of diarrhoea. Doctors still questioning ear infection. Another trip in a&e with dehydration. Consultant recommended going dairy free for 1 month.

Feb tonsillitis
(?)

March another 12 hour sickness bug. Followed by diarrhoea. Diarrhoea not as bad this time. Spoke in depth about night wakings, arching back etc. I suggested silent reflux. Given gaviscon.

Kept a food diary. Doctors haven't looked at this. Spoke about how gaviscon only sometimes works. Doctors have now prescribed mezzopram. Been on it a week. Definitely no improvement. If anything she's been a lot worse this week. Still also giving gaviscon.

Ear, adenoids or tonsil infection possibly, and/or maybe glue ear.

Bananarice · 09/04/2022 08:40

With the food diary have you noticed a pattern? According to my gp, health visitor are good at helping with finding

Sounds similar to my DD who's now 2.5 and recently been referred to have her adenoids and tonsils out as they aren't working as they should and she basically has constant infection in either tonsils, ears or throat.

Everytime she was teething or got a cold, she'd get over that for about a day then something else would kick in. We seen so many different GPs and had soo many antibiotics, but it turns out that she's just got a pretty much constant infection somewhere.

The infection can also sometimes travel to her joints and hip, which apparently is common in little ones so that makes them sore too obviously. ENT issues are much worse when lying down. Adenoids issues also mean she snores sometimes and takes ages to get rid of a cough. Can also put them off food and want to suck more as that action can give a bit of relief (but then makes it worse).

How's your little ones balance? Hearing? Does any of that tie in?

Some of what you've said definitely sounds familiar. She's had at least 1 ear infection, that dragged on and didn't clear with 2 lots of antibiotics or a few separate infections(?).

She definitely snores, often has a cough. Always seems to be poorly with something. She's breastfed and would like to suck all night if I'd let her.

Her balance is fine. She took her first steps at 9 months. So been walking for a while. (Shes 1 next week). Her hearing seems fine.

@PennyPenguins my DD walked at 9m too but I'd notice the odd day she was more clumsy than others. Hearing is generally fine but when she's concentrating on something she will just block all else out, but can be a bit sensitive about certain sounds like the hoover or handryers. Might be worth asking for a referral to ENT to check, but hopefully it's not the same thing as most trusts don't do anything until after 3yo! Sad

Thank you. I will be speaking to our doctor on Monday. I'll definitely mention it. I'm desperate to get to the bottom of it. Tonight for example, she's so unsettled and angry. She's already woken 4x since 730!
