I did a dip uti test as I suspect I have a uti but it doesn't give you an answer just refers you to the chemist.
I'm not getting a clear answer from Dr Google & wondered if someone here could help...
Leukocytes 15 leu/ul
Nitrites negative
Blood 25 ery/ul

Have I got a UTI with these test results?

I would go more by symptoms than by results. Dipstick tests as well as lab culture results miss a lot of positive infections. If you have the symptoms of a uti - frequency, burning, odd smelling urine then you’ve probably got one.

Nitrites are the biggest sign and yours are negative.

But if you have symptoms it could be cystitis which for me, always leads to a UTI.

Main symptom is frequency, no burning or pain so far.

I get loads and nitrites and horrible smelling pee is my best evidence.

If you don't have either of these then fingers crossed you're ok!!

You can have a uti with or without nitrites. Depends if it’s a gram positive or gram negative bacteria. And has previously said you can also have a uti with nothing showing up on culture or dipstick. One of the best uti professors in the country always said that standard lab tests are rubbish and to go on symptoms. If you have symptoms you have a uti.

Scianel · 08/04/2022 20:46

Nitrites don't show unless you've held your urine for at least four hours so most likely a morning sample.
You do have some blood and white blood cells present though.

I've never had nitrites present in a sample even when my white blood cells have been sky high.

Ah, so if I take these results to the pharmacist will they be able to help or do I need to see a GP?

GP. Don’t think pharmacists prescribe antibiotics for a uti……actually maybe some do these days?

QuebecBeignet. Was that the late Professor Malone-Lee? He literally changed my. Quality of life beyond recognition after diagnosing a severe chronic UTI that had wrecked my life for 7 years. He told me that the current tests are virtually useless in picking up UTI. I was one of his typical patients who had had years of either positive dipstick tests but normal cultures, or both negative. The white cells he saw when he looked at a fresh urine sample through a microscope, were incredibly high. He said if you symptoms of a UTI then you’ve almost certainly got a UTI He has helped so many and left an amazing legacy.

QuebecBagnet · 09/04/2022 06:14

Yes. It was Prof Malone-Lee. A great man.

Chiefofstaff · 09/04/2022 09:35

QuebecBagnet. He really was a pioneer.

MothershipG · 09/04/2022 14:28

So I went to the chemist & he did prescribe antibiotics, he mentioned the lack of nitrates and I was able to point out that as I'd hadn't done the test first thing they might not show.

Thanks for all your help & fingers crossed this knocks it on the head!!

Good luck. Hope the a/bs clear it up quickly. Glad you managed to get hold of some over the weekend. The advice the consultant I saw gives is to just drink a normal amount of fluids, not gallons, as that dilutes the antibiotics, and you can’t flush out an infection. Also fizzy vitamin c tablets are helpful.
