Thoughts on Aldi?

Generally interested. We done the Aldi switch a couple of months back now. Have saved a huge amount. However does anyone think there is a compromise in quality at all?

For a baby boy or girl though?

Echobelly · 08/04/2022 17:30

I think the quality is generally very good - most of their stuff is better than most supermarkets or as good. Come across 1 or 2 subboptimal things, but it doesn't seem like lower quality at all.

cobblers123 · 08/04/2022 17:33

I love Aldi but the packet of tomatoes I bought on Monday, yesterday I had to bin three as covered in mould.

To be fair, this is a rare occurrence with either Aldi or Lidl, I still do my main shop with them as I like a lot of their products..

QuebecBagnet · 08/04/2022 17:33

I’ve started shopping there recently. I find the quality fine. The queues are a bit annoying. There’s a new one being built in my town and I’m hoping for some self checkouts like Lidl.

pearljamm · 08/04/2022 17:35

We mostly do our shopping there, then nip to Tesco for a few bits that they don't sell- Heinz ketchup and various pulses mainly. The only downside is they don't deliver , but we tried Tesco delivery and the DC preferred Aldi cereal, biscuits, squash and crisps, and it cost a lot more (maybe because there's more choice&offers so we bought more?).

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 08/04/2022 17:36

I used to think it was comparable but the last year the quality of the meat abs the fresh produce had really declined.
I don’t know if that was a local issue or an over all issue but it made shopping frustrating as either I couldn’t get everything I wanted abs had to shop elsewhere for extras or the stuff I brought went off or tasted different eg chicken greats suddenly full of water. So when they cook all that frothy water comes out of them.

I work for a rival supermarket abs still shopped at Aldi as it was cheaper even taking in to consideration my staff discount but now I shop where I work abs can meal plan and know that the dates will be good on produce and even after. Eg strawberries with a short date will be good on the Thursday/Friday when the best before date was Monday/Tuesday but with Aldi strawberries they would go mushy before the date. Also dd says Aldi fruit doesn’t taste as nice as fruit from work.

I also think prices have crept up and the savings haven’t been big enough to keep me shopping there.

pearljamm · 08/04/2022 17:36

Also- the quality is fine, although our fruit and veg is eaten within the week. Another downside is the awful queues!

WhiteJellycat · 08/04/2022 17:37

None of the fresh stuff from Aldi or Lidl last very long. They are still my main shop but I wouldnt buy something from there and expect it it be ok to eat a week on. That's my main gripe.

RaRathebravemouse · 08/04/2022 17:37

I think the meat and veg is comparable to other supermarkets but some of the packaged stuff is not as good in my opinion.

We do our main shopping with Aldi now also. I did have to bin some onions once as also had mould on them.

Don't like their fresh fruit and veg but I think everything else is equal if not better value than other supermarkets.

I find it OK for occasional shopping but can't usually do a full weekly shop there. The range is limited in the ones near me.

Fruit and veg never lasts. Berries are regularly growing mould by the next day.

But the rest is pretty good and you can save a lot of money. I also like that they have the specials so you can try new dishes / ingredients etc.

darlingdodo · 08/04/2022 17:47

Not noticed any difference in the shelf life between Aldi/Lidl and other supermarkets (except M&S, and God knows, we can't afford to shop there!)

Really like their deli section, and dairy produce, the chocolate is good (especially like the hazelnut bar - tastes like Cadbury's Whole Nut used to years ago.

Their wine selection is excellent - really good German and Australian Rieslings (think the Aussie one, a Clare Valley, is only available sometimes), some great Italian and Portugese reds.

I like the fact that I can be in and out in twenty minutes having done a weekly shop - it would take ages in Tesco or Morrisons.

I do a top up shop of other ingredients in a local Asian supermarket - things like spices, curry pastes, pulses etc.

FuggyPidding · 08/04/2022 17:47

LOVE Aldi!! Great quality products at very reasonable prices. We swapped from Morrisons to Aldi a while back, wished we'd done it sooner. We save loads and don't shop any where else.

Cotswoldmama · 08/04/2022 17:52

Love it, we switched about 2 years ago when our local Aldi opened. We had been having deliveries from Sainsbury's but I was spending more and more as their prices went up. I found myself taking things off the list, there were no treats at all. With Aldi I can order everything I want and get a lot more and it's cheaper. I haven't had any issues with the freshness of products. Their vegan and veggie ranges have improved a lot too. We usually do click and collect as when we go in store our trolley is overflowing! It costs £5 but because the shop is so much cheaper it's worth it.

Kite22 · 08/04/2022 17:54

We switched about 15 years ago.
Saved about 30% per week on what we spend.
Saved about 50% on time.

Get quite frustrated when am waiting at the checkouts in any other supermarket nowadays about just h ow long it takes to pay and leave.

Suzi888 · 08/04/2022 17:55

Just went to Sainsbury but I’ll still do an Aldi shop- love it! Always get fruit and veg in Aldi over Tesco any day.

Rockbird · 08/04/2022 17:57

Their fake Wotsits are better than Wotsits. That's the extent of my opinion Wink
