Just curious when you stopped being described as a young woman/girl?

Or when you stopped feeling you were young and that you were just a woman, no prefix

I remember someone saying "mind the lady" for the first time when I was 24. Thought it made me sound ancient.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/04/2022 09:01

I'm 31 and my colleague in her 50s always calls me "young WaxOn" Grin

About 28 when I had 4 kids. That fourth one just took it out of me. Though I did get asked for ID the other day ( I'm 34) so I can't look that old.

Thunderface · 08/04/2022 09:04

I am 48. There is a man I work with occasionally who calls me young lady. He is about 62. He has only seen me while I'm wearing a mask so it's probably harder to judge.
Although I certainly don't feel old or consider myself to be old I'd say I stopped thinking of myself as a young woman in my early 30s.

I was in my late twenties I think.
I’ve always had a bit of a babyface and used to get ID’d regularly.

I remember visiting my parents in the highlands and being referred to as a ‘wifey’ (woman) rather than a ‘quine’ (young woman/girl) and thinking “Oh, no I’m old now!” Grin

Cannot remember exactly but it rankles now being called Madam! Mainly because in my family if I was playing up, I was called Madam!

Fascinating!! Never heard of quine - is this Scots/ Gaelic?

I am 60, i am (in my head) still a youg woman 😼

riotlady · 08/04/2022 16:42

I’m 29 and don’t really think of myself as a “young woman” anymore, but I think with other people it’s contextual- most of my colleagues are quite a bit older than I am so refer to me as the young one.

elidelochanthefirst · 08/04/2022 16:59

I'm 32 and I'm always described like this. I was in hospital recently and I could hear the nurse handover and they said the young girl in bay E.

I am the mother of a 3 year old with additional needs and I also have a chronic pain condition so I guess I feel a lot older somehow but I often get described as a young woman or girl.

Guess I'm wondering when I'm just going to be called a "woman" 🤷‍♀️

@jclm
It’s Doric, which is a dialect of Scots. I’m English myself but we moved up there when I was a young teen. The first time someone called me a quine I thought they’d said “equine” and was very confused! 😂

JMAngel1 · 08/04/2022 17:39

I think it’s all relative - I’m turning 50 soon but my MIL’s friend yesterday (in her 70s), called me a young lady - made my day Grin
However, at work I’m definitely not a young woman - most of the staff are half my age.

SoManyTshirts · 08/04/2022 17:44

I am 63 and probably called “young lady” a couple of times a week. If the person is more than 5 years older than me, I’m OK with it.

If they are under 60 I’m inclined to pull them up on it. It’s not flattering to assume I want to look younger.

This is what I was going to say....... you just have to mix with people older than you are, then you remain ever young Smile
