Has anyone learned to ride as an adult?

I love horses and I've always wanted to learn to ride. As a child it was absolutely vetoed on safety grounds. I'm now early 30s and have come to the belated realisation I could now take riding lessons if I wanted to! Is this a thing people do? Is it possible?? I'm not very fit but fairly flexible and have good balance etc...

I'm in my 30s and started having a few lessons before I got pregnant. I really enjoyed it and would love to start it up again if/when I have time in the future. I also had a friend in his 40s who starting learning to rider and loves it. Go for it!!

Another saying go for it, nearly definitely the most rewarding hobby out th er re and it doesn't totally matter how fit you are etc, you'll use muscles you've never had to use and build them up

DH rides, learnt in his 40s. No lessons but I have 2 ex riding schools horses. Very safe and we are very insistent about minimum mouth contact. He has good balance but it's not pretty!

Had my first riding lesson at the age of 47 a few weeks ago (DS rides and wanted me to try it). I loved it! Alas we can't afford for both of us to do lessons at the moment. Go for it.

Do it! I got back into it (pre baby. I’ve had to stop again). There were a few adult groups at our local place and 3 of us used to go on a Wednesday morning before work (it was ace! Real highlight of my week) We got up to doing x country at one point.

You only have one life, do it!

I find it more odd that you're asking, tbh.

Is what a thing people do?

Exercise? Take up new hobbies? Do something they've always wanted to?

Nope, you're right. That is all entirely impossible... Wink

I used to work at a riding school and we did adult only beginner group lessons several times a week alongside private 1-2-1s, you wouldn't be the odd one out at all!

I use to work at a riding/ dressage stables and we got people of all ages , sexes , walks of life . one of my fondest memories was a lady brought her granddaughter ( about 6 ) in a few weeks in a row and decide she wanted to give it a go as well , she spoke about it a few times but kept saying when the time is right I will book a lesson , just on just for the fun of it .
She booked it on the day she retired aged 67 and continued to have lessons for many months after .

Go for it , you will find muscles you never knew you had and you will ache but hopefully have a great time .
Do plenty of research first, look for recommendations, phone up and ask if you can watch a lesson / have a look round the yard ( please dont just turn up )
