If you're really run down what do you take?

Is there such a thing as a "tonic" as suggested by an elderly neighbour?

I'm anaemic, underacrive thyroid. I've had a really rough cold for weeks, then covid. Ill children, not sleeping. Feel utterly worn out abd wretched. I'm taking levothyroxine abd iron. I usually eat a pretty good balanced diet but this has gone to pot a bit with feeling so shite. I just don't know what else to do to help myself.

I'm thinking of a short term pick me up but also interested in recommendations for longer term supplements or vitamins that have made a noticeable difference.

Take time for yourself and some rest!

Easier said than done I know. Have you asked GP to do bloods? They will be able to identify and prescribe. There's been many occasions where I've had about 6 different supplements to take and definitely noticed a difference

Balance of rest, exercise and healthy diet

b12 Vitamin injections are great for me too

Floradix is excellent but if you’re already taking iron it might not agree with you.

DeathMetalMum · 07/04/2022 21:33

Metatone tonic.

I'd ensure you have plenty of vitamin c in your diet or take a supplement it will help with iron absorption and just generally.

Metatone tonic?

Starbonnet123 · 07/04/2022 21:36

When I'm feeling down and under the weather I take vitamin D , C and drink more water . I also eat eggs regularly for B12 , my daughter gets B12 injections and tells me she feels the benefit immediately .
Can you get a blood test at the doctors to see if you're lacking in vitamins ?

RonWeasleysBackfiringWand · 07/04/2022 21:38

Make sure you’re not taking levothyroxine and iron at the same time of day - separate by a couple of hours or more to ensure the levothyroxine doesn’t bind to the iron an prevent it being absorbed properly.

The best thing you can do for yourself is fresh air, sunlight, early bedtime, loads of vegetables and fruits, plenty of water, a vitamin c supplement at the same time as the iron and a 25microgram (= 1000iu) vitamin D supplement.

I hope you feel better soon.

When I'm really run down I take Floradix iron tonic, Vit D spray and magnesium. Sometimes also a B-vitamin complex and something like Berroca. I alos use First Defense before travelling anywhere or being in public as that fends off viruses quite effectively.

cheapskatemum · 07/04/2022 21:39

This was me in January. A colleague recommended vitamin D. I take one tablet of it a day & it appears to have really helped.

Svara · 07/04/2022 21:42

Sunlight, particularly morning sun. Sleep. Exercise. Being outside barefoot. Plenty of fruit and veg, minimal processed food.

RicherThanYew · 07/04/2022 21:48

I have fibro and nothing helps so I try to get an early night and drink plenty of black coffee to get through the day. I did try that metatone stuff after a bad bout of flu but it didn't help me.

JaneJeffer · 07/04/2022 21:52

Metatone or Fosfor

flowerycurtain · 07/04/2022 21:56

I make my mums lentil soup on a Sunday pm. A huge vat of it. Loads of garlic and ginger.
Eat a green salad for lunch every day that week.
Headspace after lunch.
Lentil soup for tea.
Bed with the kids at 7

Gives me a reset.

Good luck

Inchail · 07/04/2022 21:56

Elderflower and echinacea tonic

Best to arrange blood tests with GP in the first instance before you start taking anything because if you start taking something and then it gets into your system any blood tests you get might be skewed. This is a might be interesting reading for you londonclinicofnutrition.co.uk/nutrition-articles/what-vitamins-should-not-be-taken-with-thyroid-medication/

ImFree2doasiwant · 07/04/2022 22:14

Thanks all. I'm due a blood test for the anaemia and thyroid. I do take the thyroxine first thing and iron at lunchtime amd bedtime . I havent been able to go to the GP due to us having covid one after the other (single parent so children with me all the time) but I will call tomorrow to book in.

I just feel so tired and useless. I'm finding the school.holidays had going. I'm 44, but feel about 84 atm.
