I've just had 3 young girls knock asking to wash the car

Very young. Definitely primary age. I didn't recognise them, so they don't live in the immediate vicinity.

First, I was surprised at my initial reaction at seeing children walking up my drive. I felt sure something must be wrong or that they must be up to no good. It's occurred to me now that it's really very unusual for children to knock on my door, whereas when I (and my DC) was young it would have been common, asking for a ball back, looking for a lost cat, selling raffle tickets or collecting milk bottle tops etc.

However, back to the point. They wanted to clean my car for "less than £10".

Would you let young children you didn't know do that?

No. Unless it’s a road where pretty much everyone knows everybody - rare nowadays I think - kids shouldn’t be knocking on stranger’s doors like that. Sounds horrible, sorry, but what if those three young girls knocked on a sexual predator’s door?

Why are you so worried about strangers' kids knocking on your door? Do you think they're casing your place or what?

It does annoy me when people are suspicious for no good reason.

No it wasn't that it, just felt odd because it's so unusual. I'm wary in case something happens to them, as much as me or my property or in case it turns out parents don't know and somehow I'm to blame .

Lots of things that don't make sense, which is what made me think and why this thread was started.

@musicalfrog I think the OP is more worried about the children themselves? I certainly wouldn’t let my primary aged DC knock on a stranger’s door by themselves!

No. We don’t want our cars scratched or the inevitable shrieking on our driveway.

There is a boy that does it round here, he is about 14 now, he has built up a proper little business for himself. Does a fab job, even has a Facebook for business page.

My husband who is a plumber went to his house to do a bit of work, he left him a review on Facebook so we got him round to clean the van and left him a review. Now whenever someone needs a plumber he recommends my husband. He is bloody brilliant.

balalake · 07/04/2022 18:28

If it was for charity I'm sure they would have said so.

fabulousathome · 07/04/2022 18:40

Just dodgy. I'd say no, very nicely.

No buckets or shampoo. Very odd, are they there for a dare or worse to steal?

(Cynical Londoner here).

Their opening words were actually "hi we're from Little Scrubbers"

I wonder if someone put them up to that and if they realised.

£10 😂😂😂

When I was young we went round doors asking if they had any empty ginger bottles or if we could take their babies out for a walk in the pram 😂😂😂

Gosh yes, I'd forgotten, perfectly normal to let children take the pram out.

@Lesperance

Bob a job week? Haven't heard of anybody doing that since the 80s though.
No, like I said, it was years ago.
