The info line only states “Funds Transfer”. It’s into our joint account and husband knows nothing about it either.

I’m in work shortly so won’t be able to call the bank for a few hours.

Anyone want to proffer fun ideas as to why it’s there, and what to do with it*?

*Other than not get attached to it as I’d imagine it’ll be taken back sharpish if it is a banking error.

Ooo put all your lights on, turn the heating up all day and fill up your car!

But yes this

FindingMeno · 07/04/2022 08:34

Withdraw it quickly and deny all knowledge.
Then take a flight to Costa somewhere and become a fugitive.

You of course mean OP can choose one of those options @Cornettoninja of course... its not a million pounds at today's prices! Grin

I got carried away @MichelleScarn Sad

It’ll be some hapless idiot that’s not double checked the account details when transferring to a friend or family member or something.

It’s me - I’m the hapless idiot. I did this about 2 years ago. I even got an error message to say some of the info (maybe account name? Can’t remember) didn’t match, and did I want to continue? And bizarrely I was so sure I was right, I just clicked ‘yes’. The lovely person I transferred to was honest and gave it back to me - luckily it wasn’t in the thousands but I’d have still been noticeably out of pocket if they hadn’t!

AlexaShutUp · 07/04/2022 08:59

This happened to me a few months ago. I even had a thread about it on here. It was someone who had transferred the money to my account in error.

What happened next, @AlexaShutUp? As in, did you have to contact the bank or did they just take it back automatically?

Obviously I’m going to just leave the money in the account so it can be returned to the rightful owner, but I’m hoping it’s not something that will have to take up any of my time.

it can't be error these days, they have to have the correct name on the account before transferring

MissyB1 · 07/04/2022 10:04

Ah yes sorry it’s mine, I meant to transfer it into my savings account, please can I have it back? Grin

SniffMyQuiffyHair · 07/04/2022 10:11

shoves @MissyB1 out of the line<
Shut ya face tis mine I tell ya

TheLadyDIdGood · 07/04/2022 10:13

Get in touch with your bank as it could be a scam, they're so sophisticated nowadays. Don't spend it because if the money isn't legally yours then you might need to return it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 07/04/2022 10:13

It's actually mine. Was wondering where it had gone Grin

Some banks don't have this system. Mine, for example.

I can put any misspelt name on it and it will just transfer to that account number

ExplodingElephants · 07/04/2022 10:16

Look out for another thread on here saying ‘where’s my £2.5k’ 😆

merryhouse · 07/04/2022 10:16

With a reference so deliberately vague but official-sounding as "Funds Transfer" I'm pretty confident in saying it's almost certainly a scam.

Someone who'd done it by mistake would have put "Dublin holiday" or "car deposit" or "maintenance back-payment" or "Wedding Smith-Jones" or something.

Don't let anyone persuade you into paying anything back. Let the bank sort it.

Watch out for the scam if it’s a banking error it will be corrected, if another person or bank contacts you refer them back to your bank.
KELLOGSspeck · 07/04/2022 10:19

I would wait it out a week or so.

Headabovetheparakeet · 07/04/2022 10:20

If it is a scam, how does it work?

Mumdiva99 · 07/04/2022 10:21

Mine say funds transfer if I don't put a reference in. So I would think error not scam.

MrsEricBana · 07/04/2022 10:22

It should cover 4 portions of fish and chips.
(But yes, let bank sort it, and treat yourself to some fish & chips anyway)

SawnWood · 07/04/2022 10:22

Don’t transfer it anywhere or to another account if asked. Even if the bank seems to call and ask, that’s a scam. Let the bank move it.
We had this and it was our in-laws just didn’t tell us 😂

Kezzie200 · 07/04/2022 10:24

We tried to pay off our car PIP to a regular finance company that banks with Santander, and it didn't recognise the name. I'm pretty sure it was in order but the bank settings were warning me not too and it was too much money to risk so I dug out the old cheque book and paid through the postal system!! Remember those days?

So not all banks do account name recognition.

Kezzie200 · 07/04/2022 10:25

I'd also wait for the bank to action. But meanwhile I wouldn't spend it.

gamerchick · 07/04/2022 10:27

We had this in reverse and the bank told us that if it had gone into someone's account they can ask for it back but couldn't take it. Was a few panic striken moments before we found it has gone into the void, so got it back ok.

Triple check now.

Bananarama101 · 07/04/2022 10:29

It's mine OP. I'll let you know my account details and you can send it on to me Grin
