Mastitis 12 days postpartum - GP or midwife?

Who would you contact? I’m still under the midwives but was hoping to be discharged tomorrow. I doubt the GP will do anything now so will have to wait until tomorrow. I feel fucking awful Sad have tried everything to unblock the duct but nothing is working.

Can you ring the delivery/post natal ward? I'm sure that's what I was told to do if any issues in the first 14 days.

If you are feeling feverish as well as in pain then I'd call NHS 111 - when I had it I had never felt so ill and they sent an emergency doctor out within the hour.

GP, in case you need antibiotics as most midwives do not prescribe

Yep GP or 111. If you have a fever it needs treating ASAP. I've know women be admitted with mastitis. Keep the breast drained as much as possible, either BF/expressing/hot and cold compresses/shower on the breast. You can still feed through mastitis.

Follow the advice from LLL (and I also swear by cabbage leaves), and call both GP and midwife and see who gets back to you first. Good luck, it’s horrible, I know.

Oh my goodness I remember feeling awful with mastitis. Just do whatever you can to get rid of it asap, ring anyone who will help you. I also did lots of feeding on that side so my baby would help me to clear the blockage. Ouch! I hope it passes soon

If you feel unwell please ring triage (or whatever number you were given to ring if you were in labour/ reduced fetal movements/ waters breaking etc) - they’ll be best placed to advise.

Call the GP. The one is work at is open until 6:30pm and anything urgent still gets dealt with. We'd get you antibiotics this evening, so it's worth a try in case yours is also good!

Dangle feed - I did that. Put baby on the bed and dangle your breast in their mouth. Cleared for me and the milk flowed for ages after.
