Anyone had a high needs baby then later found out it was something else?

Just that really.

My 9-month-old extremely high needs DS has already been diagnosed with reflux and CMPA which are both managed. He appears to be hitting all his milestones.

He was an IUGR baby who is on 0.4th percentile for height and weight.

He is under paediatrician care but they don't live with him so don't see how bad he is.

If anything he seems to be getting worse as the months go by which I didn't think possible!

I can't shake the feeling that there is something else causing him to be like he is.

I'd appreciate anyone sharing experiences of any conditions that, looking back, explain why your DC appeared high needs.

Wow. I just stumbled across this thread whilst googling something. Turns out I commented on it 2.5 years ago under a different name Grin I was sure my then high needs 2 year old, who had also been an extremely high needs baby was NT. Now at age 4.5 he is clearly autistic with lots of sensory issues. He will also be assessed for ADHD aged 6 but I am less convinced by this. If the OP is still around I hope things settled!

Great to hear from you @McPlant1! I don't even remember writing this thread, but it's a stark reminder of how bad things were.

That's interesting that your DS has since been diagnosed with ASD as that probably explains his high neediness(!) Being an autistic baby must be so hard. I'm not surprised your DS was so upset a lot of the time 💐

For anyone reading this and wondering, my DS is now 3 and still what I consider a high needs child! He is extremely senstive (has a tantrum if I deign to look at him sometimes!), very high-maintainence, screams cries at the drop of a hat at least 20 times a day and is not really big on toys but can spend hours dancing/singing/talking to himself.

He is also the most affectionate, loving, funny, bright little boy who still loves being carried around and cuddled at every opportunity. (He's still tiny and we have since found out how has a growth hormone deficit.)

Anyone who's going through this now: it does get a lot better when you can finally get them sleeping through (at 2.5 in our case)!

Did you go onto get a diagnosis of ASD yourself OP? It was a very interesting thread and we all felt for you!
