Why is android video quality always poor?

I have an old iPhone, a 7 I think. Had it for years and I desperately need a new one. I mainly use it to take photos and videos aswell as browse the internet. I've always used iPhones so that's what I'm used to but I was thinking of trying a Samsung galaxy but all my friends who have android phones and send me videos or upload videos onto Instagram or something the quality always looks rubbish and blurry. DP has a plus one and it's the same if he sends me videos the quality of the video is really crap. Is this a thing with android phones? Could it be my phone? It's really putting me off if so as I often take videos of my baby to have as memories.

What android phones?
Android is an operating system.

I’ve had equivalent release Samsung and iPhones (1 for work 1 personal) and the quality was very similar. However if you are comparing a cheap Android phone with an iPhone of course the quality will be lower because you aren’t comparing like for like hardware.

doodlebugsy · 05/04/2022 12:02

I'm talking fairly new Samsung galaxy's (1/2 year old) and one plus phones.

Also, did you mean that your OH has a OnePlus? That’s a mid range phone with a price tag of £800 for the latest model. The latest Samsung model is nearly 50% more.

IglesiasPiggl · 05/04/2022 12:04

I have a Sony phone on Android and the video quality is good. It's the phone not the operating system that affects video quality.

Dearmariacountmein · 05/04/2022 12:06

Cross posted.

I’m not sure what to suggest tbh if you are comparing like for like and thing the Samsung Galaxy’s are lacking.

Like I say It’s not something I’ve noticed and I had a S20 and iPhone 12 at the same time (similar release and price point) and work in a visual tech field so exposed to images and videos all day

That's just 1 person though, I have 3 friends and both my parents have Samsung galaxies and when they send videos the quality is always rubbish. I'm not sure if this cold just me because my phone old though? I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to phones.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy s21 & the video quality is excellent. If its blurry that sounds more like a fault with whoever is taking the video rather than the phone.

Kinneddar · 05/04/2022 12:09

Sounds as if the fault might be your phone. I regularly send & receive videos and there's never been any problem with the quality

babywalker56 · 05/04/2022 12:28

No you’re right. The quality of Android phones are absolute shite. I’ve had an iPhone 5c, 6, XS and now 12. The camera on iPhone is so so crisp and very clear.

My mum has had an Android (and I’m talking the latest Samsung Galaxies as that’s the only one she likes) for years. We have a running joke that her camera is like CCTV😂 not sure if you use social media but the camera on snapchat is so so bad. You can literally tell if someone has an Android just by the pictures/videos that get posted. All my aunties have Samsung Galaxies (one has the most recent Google phone tho) and the pictures are the same.

For years people have always said Samsung Galaxies are better than iPhones and I’ve never made the change to an Android solely because of the camera! So no, it’s not just you. It’s definitely a camera issue but I think iPhone users pick up on it more because our camera isn’t anything like that

That's interesting because my Samsung photos are miles better than ones my friends take on their iPhones!

Never had an issue with video quality either @doodlebugsy.

When I watch Instagram stories I can always tell a mile off which ones are taken on a android! I'm debating now getting the iPhone 11 (only going back to work part time so can't afford a newer iPhone, where as the Samsung galaxy s21 fe was a reasonable monthly price).

@doodlebugsy haha yes definitely! Even when my family members send me pictures. I don’t know how to describe it but I can just look at it and tell they don’t have an iPhone. It always looks somewhat pixelated if you know what I mean?

I’d just get the iPhone 11 if I was you. There’s no need to have the most up to date phone anyway. As long as it works and does what you need it to do then go for it. I certainly won’t be getting an upgrade after this phone! I also feel like once you’re used to an iPhone it’s just team iPhone forever😂 ofc get what you prefer but I think you’ll have to accept that the camera isn’t the same as an iPhone

Same here. My niece has an iPhone & my photos are miles better than hers. I take loads of photos & the quality has never been poor.

justasoul · 06/04/2022 07:09

My guess is dirty lens, OP.

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 06/04/2022 07:54

My guess is they reduce the quality to upload them as that makes the file size smaller saving data.

InkySquid · 06/04/2022 07:59

Often video quality is reduced when it's uploaded/shared so what you are seeing isn't representative of the quality of the video.

BertieBotts · 06/04/2022 08:01

It might be compression. I did find my old Sony took blurry videos though whatever I did to try and fix it. My pixel phone takes really nice sharp ones though.

DH was telling me the other day something about the camera being largely software driven, which is why on Android if you take a photo using the WhatsApp camera interface vs the normal camera app you'll see a big difference in quality. But certainly the camera can be great on some Android models.

You can normally try phones out in a shop before you buy or look at GSMArena for their reviews which show previews of the photo and video performance. I'd do that if video quality is important to you.
