Do you have storage heaters? Or are all electric?

I'm reading the posts about high electricity prices and I haven't seen anything from people who are all electric at home.

We already pay £325 per month.

This is before the prices went up. We are with Bulb.

There is no alternative to electric heating as we live rurally.
We have had cavity wall insulation and shut blinds and curtains at night.
The hot water is on for 1 hour at cheap rate, the washing machine and dishwasher are on timers for night rate and we never use the tumble drier.

I'm at a loss on what to do. Other than move house.

Anyone all electric?

Yep, storage heaters here.

Water is on for a few hours overnight (stupid crappy immersion takes ages to heat - need a new one)

We did turn the heating off before the price rise but had to turn it on again as it's so fucking cold. We're in the SW so got it warmer than most I expect, but it was 11 degrees in the house when it was off.

Our quarterly bill before the price rise was 570 quid. We only have 3 heaters.

I'm considering if a lpg boiler just for the hot water would be better. We sometimes go days without using the immersion (dishwasher and electric shower) and then when we do want hot water it runs out or tops up with cold if we use a bit and cools it all down. Hate the thing.

Our on peak kWh has gone from 25p to 35p. Daily standing charge is at the cap (57/58p?)

Not all-electric, but don't like to see your post go unanswered!

Have you maxed out on loft insulation? That is cheap as chips, easy to install, and really does make a big difference.

Heat pumps are supposed to be the next big thing. They extract heat from either the ground or the air while using much less lecky. Might be worth a look. They're expensive, but if your bill is heading up towards £600 a month then the "payback time" suddenly becomes more attractive.

I'm sure you've thought of it, but if you're rural could you use some sort of solid-fuel heating and go round sawing up fallen trees?

I'm all electric too.
Just don't use the storage heaters at all as they are expensive & rubbish.
We have lots of blankets though (always have though), got a plug in halogen heater when it gets really cold.
Windrows & doors always shut.
Rarely put the hot water on - the shower is electric and have a dishwasher, but when I do, it's overnight.
Got economy 7 so only run the dishwasher & washing machine overnight.
Batch cook where possible, and use my Ninja rather than turning on the oven.
Tend to work from home, so use light and power all day. Me and my daughter, we pay £120/month now.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 05/04/2022 20:23

Oh, and what I'm doing? Hot water bottle and blanket on the sofa and when I'm wfh.

Just bought a timer plug for the dishwasher (washing machine has a built in timer) but worried about running it overnight while we sleep from a fire safety perspective.

Hope the weather warms up.

And hope it doesn't rain at the weekends long enough for me to dry school uniform outside. No tumble drier here but do have a dehumidifier.

My neighbour has just had air source heating fitted - they got a grant, and it was a lot of upheaval laying all the pipes and fitting the radiators but he's really happy with it. I'm going to look into it myself.

RainbowMum11 · 05/04/2022 20:26

I am lucky to have a conservatory so I dry the washing on clothes horses in there which is perfect.

jupitermars1345 · 05/04/2022 20:30

Yes all electric
On the old rate we was paying about 120 a month.
Two bed flat

BooseysMom · 05/04/2022 20:32

We have air source heating and it's £62 p/m. We are in a 2 bed new-build which is so well insulated that we boil in heatwaves! It's great in winter though as the yemp rarely falls below 18 degrees. It keeps the house warm for ages. We have yet to have our increase in bills though

BooseysMom · 05/04/2022 20:32

Temp not yemp

People with ASHP are going to struggle also.

Sacada · 05/04/2022 20:39

Remember the 'Economy 7' tariff - if you have it - is NOT A FREE LUNCH. If you are on the Economy 7 tariff, you ipso facto, pay a HIGHER daily standing charge, and a HIGHER unit rate outside the Economy 7 hours.

That means - as a rule of thumb - unless you are using more more than 50% of your electricity during the Economy 7 hours - I suspect most people don't - if would actually be cheaper to opt to go onto a 'NORMAL' tariff.

LardyDee · 05/04/2022 20:40

@Tulip1985

People with ASHP are going to struggle also.
But they'd struggle more without?
SarahAndQuack · 05/04/2022 21:27

We're on oil as we're in the sticks, and it's a bit frightening. We have been really careful about loads of blankets on beds, throws on the sofa, etc. Not having baths (we shower; we're not filthy! Grin) as it uses a lot. I don't know if it's just us but we realised just turning on the hot tap to wash hands tends to trigger the water heater, so we're trying to remember to use the cold when it's just a quick rinse. Probably obvious but I never thought about it before.

geminiflanagan · 05/04/2022 21:38

All electric here. 2 bed terrace in the SW, also with Bulb. About to start paying £193pm for 2 adults and a 6 year old. We have x2 oil heaters and a heated dryer. Generally quite a cold fresh house, luckily none of us can bear to be hot and stuffy with central heating!

Blimeyherewegoagain · 05/04/2022 21:40

I saw a thing online recently where people who are on economy 7 or similar are having battery storage installed, so they can store cheap electric for use during the day. The trouble is that it needs financial outlay and I’m not sure what the payback time would be.
