Cleaner- does this sound reasonable?

If you have a cleaner/are a cleaner, how long would you expect it to take to do the following? I had a new cleaner start on Friday last and our expectations seem quite mismatched, despite discussing beforehand, so I want to understand if I’m being unrealistic or not before I speak with her.

Kitchen/dining/livingroom- open plan but not too many surfaces so mainly the kitchen (which is quite large with lots of granite countertops), along with the hob, and clean wooden floor.
Does not need to do oven/fridge/inside cabinets etc.

Hall (minimal dusting and cleaning large area of tiles)

Downstairs loo (small room- toilet, floor tiles, sink, mirror).

Vacuum stairs (carpet).

Vacuum carpet on landing.

Clean just 1 bedroom- vacuum carpet, change bedding (bed already stripped by me), small amount of dusting.

En suite- clean toilet, sink, mirror, shower, floor.

Main bathroom- clean toilet, sink, mirror, floor.
Bath doesn’t need to be cleaned as not used.

We have more rooms but they’re not in use at all so don’t need to be cleaned.

Cleaner isn’t required to do laundry, ironing, dishes or anything not listed above.

There are no small kids in the house anymore so it stays fairly tidy.

We’re pretty minimalist so very few things like side tables/table lamps/ornaments etc. to dust.

My cleaner could do that in 3/2.5 hours. It took me 3 hours to clean 2 bathrooms and a downstairs loo today. I hate not having a cleaner but we can’t afford it at the moment.

Hercisback · 04/04/2022 21:39

3 hours perhaps?

Imabouttoexplode · 04/04/2022 21:42

First few times, 3.5 hours. Deep clean, skirting boards, nooks n crannies, finding plug sockets etc. After that, 3 hours but it does depend on how big, how tricky etc. I'd say bath does need to be cleaned btw cos dust will accumulate.

4 hours roughly with hoovering and mopping I'd say if you want a good job. Do you want bed changing?

Ilostit · 04/04/2022 21:45

3 hours

Thanks everyone.

When I called her to book, she was very much saying that her time would be based on the size of the house/number of bedrooms. I disagreed as there are a number of rooms she wouldn’t ever need to clean so asked her to quote based on the rooms I listed above.

She said three hours so agreed to try that for the first day but then it ended up being four hours (she told me approaching the three hour mark that she wouldn’t be finished so we agreed she’d stay and obviously I’d pay for four hours). She’s now said that it’ll be at least five hours in future, which sounds very excessive to me. I’ve been doing all my own cleaning up to now and can do everything listed above in 3/3.5 hours and I would have expected a professional cleaner to be faster than me.

She charges £17.50/hr so £87.50 a week. I provide all equipment and products.

Think I’ll be on the hunt for another cleaner, depending on what she says when I speak to her tomorrow.

Our cleaner does a similar downstairs and carpet stairs in 1.5 hours. It was 2 hours for the first few weeks to bring it up to standard. So I would expect 3 hours including the upstairs things you listed

Stripyhoglets1 · 05/04/2022 00:08

3 hours at the most. My cleaner does a small 4 bed in 2.5.

We only have one bathroom and downstairs loo though.

findingsomeone · 05/04/2022 00:20

I think three hours. Mine charge £15 and use their own products.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/04/2022 03:39

Cleaner here! I would say to start with 3 hours. If it progressively takes a little less time as your cleaner gets used to layout etc, then I would expect to deep clean one room per visit to make that time up or you renegotiate time/jobs.

Aug12 · 05/04/2022 04:11

I would say 3 to 3.5hrs for that clean. First cleans always take longer so she may need 4hrs or so for the first few weeks to get things all up to speed and then pace will pick up.

Imabouttoexplode · 05/04/2022 06:18

I wouldn't expect a cleaner to be faster than the home owner..... I'd expect them to be more thorough. Unless you specifically say you only want a light touch and a tickle over each room.

Changeychangey · 05/04/2022 12:07

My cleaners come for 1.5 hours, there's 2 of them so it's 3 hrs work. They do very similar amount to yours, and they work to a very high standard. They even tidy if I've been having a bad week (I'm disabled).

5 hours is ridiculously long, imo.

Changeychangey · 05/04/2022 12:11

And mine bring all their own equipment and products, £20 h but worth every penny

HighlandCowRose · 13/04/2022 21:34

I'm a cleaner and would say 2.5 - 3 hours, depending on the actual size of the kitchen/living space.

5 hours seems excessive
