NHS Fit Mask Testing

Anyone that work in the NHS had this? I need to go for it tomorrow as my DD has covid. I've tested negative on PCR and now need to be fitted for a special mask before I can return to work.

Can anyone tell me what it involves?

If its the same as the ones I have done, they put a hood over your head and spray a substance in and see how many puffs of the spray it takes before you can smell it. They then do the same with the mask on to make sure you can no longer smell it.

Make sure you dont ear or drink for 1 hour before the test. It is just fitting you for FFP3 masks

I’ve done the hood one and the one where they try different masks on you and attach it to a machine and make you breathe doing various exercises.

If it’s the hood one you can’t eat or drink for half an hour before hand.

I have to go for this next week. can anyone tell me if you have to wear them all the time on the wards? Sorry for the ignorance. I am about to start a bank HCA job and have not worked on wards since well before covid.

Pickandmix41 · 04/04/2022 16:46

Yes I believe it is the FFP3 mask, I hadn't been told not to eat or drink so thanks for that. How much worse are they to wear than the general masks? I am patient facing but not clinical so have never had to wear one before! I feel claustrophobic enough in the usual ones so I'm a little nervous about it!

Significantly worse to wear than the surgical masks. But a lot more effective.

GoodSoup · 04/04/2022 18:22

@Babyroobs no we only wear them for covid patients requiring aerosol generated procedures. Otherwise we just wear the surgical masks. Your Trust will have a policy though with guidance.

Well I guess they are worse in that they’re tight.

Thanks . That's reassuring ! I was already beginning to have second thoughts about this bank job, before I realized we would have to wear them.
