Kidney disease at 40 years old

Hi, I know this should go onto the Health board but I wanted to try and get a few more responses. I’ve just been diagnosed with kidney disease stage 2. I’m forty years old. Does anyone out there have this or know some with this? According to the research I have done, being diagnosed with CKD stage 2 at 40 means you have life expectancy of 30 years, which leads me to 70. I know some people have very short lives (my dad died at 40), so I should be grateful to get this far (if I do), but it still freaks me out a little.

I’m just looking for advice and reassurance from anyone with experience.
Thank you so much xx

Also, I have been having the worst night sweats for about three weeks now. I've had them for about 10 years, but sporadically and have always been put down to my antidepressants which I am on a high dosage. But recently it's every single night and it's horrible :(

Bookworm - have you had your Vit D levels checked? Low vit D can cause night sweats and as vit D is synthesised in the kidneys it could be a problem for you with CKD, could be caused by a number of other things as well but just a suggestion!

I have been diagnosed with a PUJ obstruction which has damaged my right kidney a lot - down to 19% function. Having surgery to correct in a few days. It's all come as a big shock so I can at least relate to that, and consultant still isn't 100% sure what's causing the obstruction so won't know until he does the surgery so that's also worrying.

Have you got any answers from your GP yet?

Please try not to worry. Your egfr of 76 is very good and everyone loses some kidney function with age .
Mine is currently 39, age 69 and it doesn't affect my daily life.
Don't take ibuprofen, (advice from my kidney consultant).
Eat lots of veg.
The probability is that your kidney function will stay at stage 2, so please take heart from that.
It's a big shock when you get diagnosed, but the shock wears off and you just get on with your life.
Sending hugs - you'll be fine. xx

Get in touch with Kidney Care UK. They have lots of information on their website about being newly diagnosed, as well as a free phone counselling service should you feel you need someone to speak to for mental health support.

I was diagnosed with IGAN kidney disease 3 years ago at the age of 30.

My gfr was 56 and my creatinine was really high.

3 years on my gfr is 69 (it fluctuates my 10% sometimes on my monthly blood tests) and my creatinine has stabilised. I have lots of protein in my urine and also blood but I've learnt not to worry about that.
I'm on 20mg steroids, a low dose now of Mycophenolate and Bp meds. The meds are key.

Have you had a biopsy to see how aggressive your KD is? I have given you worrying about it.
We could all be killed in a car crash today but we don't worry endlessly about that. It's taken years for me to get to this mindset so I understand it takes time.

Look after yourself, make good health choices, take your meds and you stand a good chance in leading a normal life
