What's your daily smart meter reading?

We've lived in our new build flat for 4 years. I've never seen the smart meter go above £6.30, ever. Even in the depths of winter where we have the radiator on all day, loads of washing, multiple dishwasher cycles etc.

Since 1st April we are now averaging £8 a day Shock Yesterday I did 2 loads of washing on 30C and had the radiator (only one!) on for maybe 5 hours throughout the entire day. Ran the dishwasher once, boiled the kettle a few times... so I haven't been going nuts.

We also have an air conditioning system and heated tiles in the bathroom that comes from a separate energy provider, this also heats our hot water, so in total we're looking at £350+ a month at the moment.

How are people going to survive this?

Our gas usage was over £6 yesterday. It's doubled since the price cap rise.

So today we are not having the heating on. Out come the thick jumpers and socks.

Our electricity is ok as we are on a special electric car charging tariff. We are also looking to invest in solar and convert to heating the hot water with it.

Yes, even when ours was up around the £6 mark I would wince!

I've switched the radiator off. 19.7C in the sitting room so that's manageable with jumpers and socks.

Ours was £8 on 1st April, I couldn’t believe it. We only had the heating on for a couple of hours, and 3 of us shared the bath water and the gas alone was £4.50. It’s insane and it’s going up again in October! We’re in 5 bed detached house but my energy bills will be bigger than my mortgage at this rate! We’re thinking of investing in onesies for the winter!

£8 a day is a lot isn't it! Hard to swallow that cost, but I'm not sure how I can cut down on using the washing machine and the heating Confused We don't have the radiator on all day, only a few hours.

We’re in a 5 bed detached. Heating on for 1 hour this morning and 1 hour this evening. 2 loads of washing done and tumble dryer on for 1 hour ish. Smart says electric £7.82 and gas £6.10

TwoBlueFish · 04/04/2022 21:05

£4.90 gas yesterday and electric £3.31, that’s usage so doesn’t include standing charge or VAT. Heating was on for less than 2 hours, 4 bed semi, 2 adults, 2 teens.

DoucheCanoe · 04/04/2022 21:09

This is our 7 day reading for our 3 bed semi on Utilita prepay metre with gas central heating and water.

So far it's not as bad as we expected but it soon adds up.

Our thermostat is set to 18C, turning your heat down a degree or so will help reduce your usage.
DoucheCanoe · 04/04/2022 21:25

Oops - yellow is electric and blue is gas.

MadisonAvenue · 04/04/2022 21:25

Our dual fuel usage has been over £7 each day since Friday, we’re four adults living in a three storey four bedroom new build semi which is well insulated.
Last night, after much arguing about how they’re going to freeze, the heating was fully turned off and the smart meter display tonight is currently at £3.64. The boiler has been heating up water for the tank, the washing machine has been on twice and the dishwasher is currently running on the eco cycle. I’ve used an air fryer and Instant Pot to cook dinner.
Our 21 year old son is currently dressed in thick joggers, a fleece hoodie and his dressing gown while clutching a hot water bottle to him.

Maverickess · 04/04/2022 21:38

I only have electricity on a smart meter, £2.41 yesterday with 2 loads of washing and 10 mins with drier on to soften towels, and a teenager that likes to have lots of lights and devices on. Electric blanket for an hour and the electric it takes to run the boiler for 4 hours.
It's more than it would have been last week definitely, but could be worse, I haven't checked the gas, I've recorded what it was on Friday and will look/do a calculation this Friday.

On the plus side the smart meter is paying for itself as I'm spending more time flicking through the screens to see what stuff costs than I am watching TV and it gives a bit of light in the hallway, so it's entertainment and light in the same device and me getting the rage that it's gone up and will go up again is keeping me warm........ 🤣

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 04/04/2022 21:41

I've started reading mine at 9pm to see how much it alters. Mine won't go up till the 1st of May as I'm on a fixed rate.
Yesterday £2.58
Today £2.09
That's for both gas + electric, 2 adults, 2 teens I'm a 3 bed semi. I'm very careful what I use though.

sachaf08 · 04/04/2022 22:29

We’re in a small 2 bed, electric only, today we’ve had two radiators ‘on’ all day (storage heaters so they come on at set times), oven and hob a couple of times, one shower, and a load of clothes washed at midnight for the cheaper rate. Also other normal things like hoover/tv/microwave and it’s at just over £4 which isn’t too bad I suppose. It does go above £5 on very cold days.

However if we had all our storage heaters on I dread to think, we only heat the lounge and bedroom at the moment.
