Fuck me, my energy bill has doubled to £150 a month!!

It's doubled.

I can't tell how much of it is the energy prices going up, and how much of it is because I haven't done a meter reading for ages and so maybe I'm paying off debt? I can't tell, it's not at all obvious (I'm with Bulb).

Is this the kind of rise the rest of you are getting on normal bills?

Does anyone know if I can find out from the Bulb website if it includes debt? If it's there I'm missing it.

@holidaytime321 but mine is £0.54 for first 2kwh and then £0.35 pence so the cap must be more as i have that in black and white

User76745333 · 04/04/2022 09:34

@MasterGland

We are on a fix until the end of June. When we slip onto the price cap in July, our bill will increase by 72%. It will then rise a further 54% (current prediction) in October. We spent £12.08 on gas and electric last week. This will be £20.77 in July and about £32 by October. A 166% increase in 4 months.
But you do realise your bills are currently minuscule. Yes its a large percentage increase but your weekly payment is about what most people pay in two days. You’re either on an amazing rate or you use hardly any energy.

But that’s because it blends in the standing charge

@User76745333 I know we are very low users, I was using the numbers to illustrate the large percentage increases coming down the line for those that had/ have cheap fixes.

worriedatthistime · 04/04/2022 09:40

@holidaytime321 im also reading about price cap now but mine is higher than this
I don't have a standing charge as they build this in but as thats only like 43 p on the cap then my first 2 kwh at £0.54 must pay this then im still on
My bill for year is expected to be £2436.01 live in a newish build 3 bed semi, heating not on a lot as holds heat well
I have tried changing before but because i have a first edition smart meter no one will touch me

holidaytime321 · 04/04/2022 09:41

@worriedatthistime, not sure then, I took the costs off the money saving expert website. Are you on a fixed tariff as I think they can be higher and price cap applies to their standard variable rate?

worriedatthistime · 04/04/2022 09:42

@User76745333 but isn't that capped at something like 43 p a day?
Surely i cover that in the 0.54 p but then I am still paying £0.35 pence

worriedatthistime · 04/04/2022 09:42

@holidaytime321 I don't think so and they said I am on their cheapest tariff , I think i will ask as would rather go variable as that would save me money

Flakjacketon · 04/04/2022 09:43

My meter readings are up to date but my DD is going up from £107 per month to £262.

User76745333 · 04/04/2022 09:43

Are you on a fixed rate? The cap only applies to the variable rate tariffs

twinsetandpearl · 04/04/2022 09:44

Looking at the price cap info on ofgem - combined gas and electric it's gone up 21p per day which is £6.50 for the month roughly

Electric up by 7p per KWh so in January it would have been £28 based on my 400kwh
Actual usage

In January i used 2329kwh gas - that's gone up by 3p so £69

So in January had I been on the latest ofgem rates I'd have paid £103.50 more than I actually did? But as I'm on a fixed rate until nov 23 looks like I am on the rates that came in 01/10/21 but I should prepare for potentially paying £100 a month more come next November? Unless something is done about the cap of course and that obviously assumes the same usage all year round when obviously summer time usage will be much less

🤯

worriedatthistime · 04/04/2022 09:47

@User76745333 im just on live chat to them now , I am on prepayment so that may make a difference as we always get ripped off , tried changing supplier but as I have a first gen smart meter none will take me , mostly citing covid so can't change meter ( which are all outside )

Blogblogblogblog · 04/04/2022 09:49

Mines gone up 190%

Sprogonthetyne · 04/04/2022 09:52

Mine is similar to yours, was £58 but will be £110 when my tariff ends at the end of the month. 2 bed ex council semi, but with good installation and no tumble dryer, so low usage.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 04/04/2022 09:55

Be really careful, I like lots got shunted onto Shell Energy fro Pure. Left there with 400 credit.(even though they kept saying I was in debt, but another story) but went up to 190 a month. THEN they said that wasn’t going to cover what they expected us to use so put Dd up to 440 quid. A month. I didn’t sleep for days. The site was down when everyone was putting in readings but then when I looked that is their forecast and they had put me in a fixed dd, which I’ve never had before. Changed to a variable which clearly states this cover the energy you actually used last month. Which is how it should be. Cheeky robbing gits.

Dolares · 04/04/2022 10:01

We are also with Bulb and I've just increased our DD from £65 to £125. I've always given meter readings monthly so there's no surprises. Also get WHD and have done a couple of top ups in the year to keep the DD low.

On the app its obvious to see which day my costs went up! This is just electricity, I don't have a smart meter for gas so need to be extra careful.

Challenge them on that. We had outside smart meters installed in October 2020 so citing Covid as a reason for not installing now is rubbish.

AchillesLastStand · 04/04/2022 12:06

@notwhatineednow

I hope everyone is going to vote the Tory fuckers out at the next election? This is ridiculous. And they have no solid plan to deal with it.
We’re with Bulb, ours has gone up from £152 a month to £267. We’re in 5 bed detached house though, but there’s only 3 of use. Our gas use on Friday was £4.50 for heating on for two hours, thermostat set to 15, and one Bath shared between us. It’s crazy, it’s the gas that’s the killer. I would try and get a smart meter installed if you can, the you see your daily usage and costs on Buib’s website. You feel more in control and have less shocks when opening emails from them!

The Tories, they’re the gift that keeps on giving, aren’t they? Never voted Tory in my life and never will. I saw Laura Kuenssberg interviewing Sunak on BBC News of Friday night. He said everyone’s feeling the pinch, he’s feeling the pinch! I was about to throw something at the TV but then thought I can’t afford to replace it.

OrangeBananaFish · 04/04/2022 12:12

3 bed semi council house here.
Oil heated so electricity only. Was 77 now 215 a month. However, the 77 was with a supplier now gone bust. We were moved to British gas in December.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 04/04/2022 12:13

Ours TRIPLED from about £100 a month (on a meter) to £335 direct debit when we moved. Luckily, we’re on a fixed tariff till December 2023, else I honestly don’t know how high it would get.

The usage isn’t high - even on the coldest winter days we had the heating on for max three hours a day - and while we could lower our electricity usage, I’m not sure I want to.

We’re also paying off £700 debt as the original £100~ direct debit wasn’t enough and even paying the £335 isn’t tbh. Not in a position to clear that at the moment though.

wishitwasaduvetday · 04/04/2022 12:18

I'm with bulb, was paying £180, then 2 months ago they put it up to £240 then this month £340!!!!! It's a 2 bed semi , we have the heating on for a couple of hours in the evening as we are out of the house all day. It's insane!

Gladioli23 · 04/04/2022 13:14

I get a PDF from bulb every month, which I could scrub the house number etc on - you could put a picture up and I might be able to help understand it?

No, I haven't had anything from them, but thanks for the suggestion! While looking for it, I've found the PDF with details from my last bill, sent earlier this month.

This has shed some light, but also, the plot thickens...

I can see now that I was paying £77 because my account had been in credit for a long time. The actual amount of estimated energy a month was in fact £115.

The £149 a month is based on an estimate they made 3 weeks ago, it's on that bill. So this rise has nothing to do with the meter readings I sent.

It looks like they've updated the electric with the new reading on the website (which has gone up from their estimate), but not the gas (which has gone down) but not re-estimated the amount I'll use this year (yet) so goodness knows where it'll leave me when they've processed it properly.

I'll call them.. probably not for a few days though as I'm crazy busy at work

The best thing to do would be find the latest one, then also find one from a year ago (ideally where you gave them readings) and use the two to estimate yearly usage.

If you give a very low or high reading close to the bill date it takes a while to get through the system as it has to be manually verified.

Once you know how much electric and gas you have used in a year you can calculate costs at the new prices and get a reasonable estimate.

Bedsheets4knickers · 06/04/2022 12:59

If we all cancelled our DD it would force the government into action

Anna197264 · 06/04/2022 13:06

Ours has gone from £183 to £383. I still can’t believe it. It’s absolutely disgusting they can do this.

DreamingOfTowels · 06/04/2022 13:07

£100 to £360 here, I think yours is reasonable compared to ours
