DS 16 fainted and whacked his head but says he's ok...

So DS and his girlfriend were in a shop when DS suddenly passed out, fell backward and whacked his head on the floor. He came round quite fast and being 16 felt a bit embarrassed so they just headed straight home. GF wanted him to go to A&E since she was concerned about how hard he hit his head. He says he is fine and really doesn't need to. He has no lump. But of course I have heard that head lumps that come outwards are normally fine, it's when they go in it's a problem so I'm now worrying myself despite him appearing totally normal!! I suffer from health anxiety so I'm not best placed to judge if he needs checking over or not. What does everyone think?
@MrsTerryPratchett I didn't say I wouldn't get the fainting checked...however, at the moment, my concern is the banged head.
But surely by going to A&E - both will be checked.

At the very least call 111 to get there opinion on it

HFGG30 · 03/04/2022 20:00

@Quartz2208 I have contacted 111! I do wish people would read the thread properly.

Im sorry @HFGG30 but I missed that inbetween other posts. otherwise I have read the thread. No need to be snippy I was just trying to help having had recent experience of fainting myself and in a child.

Plus experience of concussion as well and what to look for.

But I am glad someone is calling you back

HFGG30 · 03/04/2022 20:20

@Quartz2208 Apologies for snippiness, I'm having a bit of a stress. No phone call yet, worried I'll be sat waiting for hours only to be told to take him to A&E!

@MooPointCowsOpinion

Yeah I’d want him seen. A&E is a fucking nightmare right now though so I would also hesitate, and try and get into a minor injuries centre instead.
Most minor injury places won't deal with head trauma ime.

It’s fine I know how awful it can be

DD has had concussion twice and I’ve fainted a lot!

How is he in himself

HFGG30 · 03/04/2022 20:28

@Quartz2208 Upstairs eating pizza and laughing his head off with his girlfriend! Not an obvious hospital case Grin

Then I would book a GP appointment (easier I think said than done) to investigate the cause of the fainting because it should be looked into.

And keep an eye out for concussion signs

HFGG30 · 03/04/2022 20:40

Yeh, if it's getting late then I'll abandon the 111 call and just keep an eye on him overnight and call GP first thing.

I hope he's okay, OP and hopefully you won't need to take him to A&E.

My daughter goes through phases of fainting and feeling dizzy. She was referred to a consultant due to previous heart issues. The consultant advised us that teens can often feel faint when they have a sudden growth spurt. Lots of water with a bit of salt was recommended.

Worth keeping in mind!

lljkk · 03/04/2022 21:00

I'd assume he's going to be fine, but...

Actually, I know a doctor who (correctly) self-diagnosed concussion when he noticed his pupils were stuck in dilation. Couldn't remember anything else about how he injured himself or even have a normal conversation at that moment, but someone managed to tell his wife about the dilated pupils who sped the doc off to hospital.

So probably if the pupils are fine, I'd assume he's fine.

Any idea why he fainted?

Cisforcamel · 03/04/2022 21:06

A&E dr here. You need to go to A&E - the collapse is more worrying than the head injury. Any collapse is taken very seriously, but especially in a child/teen. Could be the first sign of a life threatening condition. Please go.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 03/04/2022 21:13

Doesn't sound like he's injured himself but you never know with these things, they can come on later and become serious quickly

I'd be worried about the fainting though even if it has happend before due to low BP, especially if it was a while ago but you've already said you will get that checked out

Hope he's OK

HFGG30 · 04/04/2022 08:36

Morning all. So I was advised by 111 to take him to A&E. They were horrifically busy at 10pm. He was very briefly seen and BP taken, light shone in his eyes etc and then we were advised that it was a 5 hour wait so we came home. They seemed happy enough for us to go back in this morning or see the GP. I have checked on him over night and he seems ok so just have to see whether I can get a GP appointment else it's a long wait at A&E again.

Shining light was to check for pupils dilated, I imagine.

Glad to hear he seems fine!

lljkk · 05/04/2022 09:40

still fine, OP?

HFGG30 · 06/04/2022 13:48

@lljkk Thanks for asking, yes no problems head wise and after describing the episode in detail the GP wasn't overly concerned. Poor lad promptly went down with a horrible sore throat and temperature tho, fully expecting him to test positive sometime soon, and having googled it, it seems there is something of a link between fainting and acute stage of covid so who knows, maybe it was that!

Mariposista · 06/04/2022 14:48

Poor lad. If he is reluctant to go to A&E due to the long wait, could you persuade him to see his GP. They can run some blood tests and work out why he felt so light headed so suddenly. If he really won't go, do keep checking on him for any headaches, confusion, nausea etc.
