HELP: Ryanair and passport expiry

ASDorNO · 03/04/2022 17:56

I'm supposed to be flying from London to Dublin on Thursday and have a British passport that expires in 4.5 months. When I booked my flight 2 months ago I checked the rules and it said that due to the common travel area British nationals don't need a passport but should carry it anyway for ID (www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ireland/entry-requirements). It never occurred to me to check with Ryanair whether they would allow this (my bad) and today when I went to check-in online it said that I need 6 months on my passport. Has anyone else had experience with this and do you know whether I will be allowed to travel? I can't speak to customer services until tomorrow.

Sorry can't help about Ryan air, exh has flown with his id to Dublin, you definitely don't need a passport legally, if Ryan air have different rules then not sure what you can do

What about driving licence as an alternative? It's acceptable for Irish immigration, so it might be ok for the flight too?

ASDorNO · 03/04/2022 18:08

@yellowsuninthesky yes I have a UK driver's licence but I'm not UK born so I'm not sure if that's valid. Will definitely take it in case.

Oh no I have just seen on their website they don't accept them for travel to Ireland. Sorry OP "Driving licenses are not acceptable for travel with Ryanair between the UK and Ireland. No exceptions will be made. The travel documents required for domestic flights differ from country to country."

Ryanair are really strict on passports as a form of id- I know they won't accept anything else. I can't definitively answer about the 6 months though.

yellowsuninthesky · 03/04/2022 18:12

And yet they say on their website that they will accept (non-EU) passports with up to three months validity for Schengen area countries (which Ireland isn't).

I think they deliberately make it as complicated as possible.

ASDorNO · 03/04/2022 18:33

I tried the Twitter DM route and it's a bot, I got an automated response taking me to this page. Can someone help me decipher this in their FAQs (confused now because of EU reference).

It appears that Ireland isn't a Schengen country so the '3 months' doesn't apply. But it also says You can check visa and passport requirements by contacting the Consulate or Embassy of the country you are planning to visit. which is what I already did when I booked (ie I don't need a passport to travel). I'm so confused.

Ryanair only accept passport

I definitely flew to Ireland from London Christmas 2019 with 1 month left on my passport though and it wasn’t a problem

Unless the rules have since changed

ASDorNO · 03/04/2022 18:45

@Fupoffyagrasshole that gives me a ray of hope until I speak to them tomorrow. Thank you Smile

I flew from Dublin to London on Ryanair a couple of weeks ago and my passport expires at the end of July. Wasn’t an issue at all.

ASDorNO · 03/04/2022 19:09

Thank you @Ifitistobesaid
