Gluten free bread. It is awful!

BabbleBee · 03/04/2022 17:38

Earlier this year I changed my diet to exclude all gluten following GP advice.

It is definitely been beneficial and if I’ve had anything with gluten in it now, I know about it! I’m guessing the intolerance is even worse now I have none at all.

I’m really missing beans on toast, and struggling with lunches especially. Can anyone recommend some properly nice bread? I’ve tried Schar, Genius, Warbertons, Tesco / Asda / Morrison own brand and none are sink-ya-teeth-in tasty. They’re all dry and crumbly which I really don’t like.

Any suggestions? Or even a recipe to make my own?

Second the tiger bread from warbutons but gives me terrible Indigestion after. These rolls are nice but as with most things Gluten free need to light toast them really for best affect.

Promise and schar frozen rolls now on the list to try. Thank you! Honestly so glad it’s not just me being picky.

I'm pretty sure they do warburtons thins that are gluten free. And they are amazing toasted with beans!!

onemouseplace · 03/04/2022 18:28

@LetsPlayBamboozled

I second the Schar frozen bread rolls. Best I've found in five years!
Yes, these are really good.

What we've found (DC is a coeliac) is that gluten free stuff needs to be freshly baked to taste best, or you need to toast it. So the Schar frozen bread rolls are good - and we definitely had another loaf that was part baked for a substitution (I think it might have been by Promise, but I can't remember now) that was really good and you honestly couldn't tell it was gluten free.

I realise this is not a helpful comment, but ... the GF bread that was available 20 years ago makes all of the current options look amazing.

I could only manage it toasted with lots of butter and peanut butter. Since I probably manage better on an overall lower carb diet I don't get bread regularly.

On a more practical point - what to do about lunches? Salads? Rice based? Sushi? Humous with salad sticks for dipping?

Buddywoo · 03/04/2022 18:47

Schar bread is brilliant. The seeded loaf and the vitality loaf are great. Even if I wasn't coeliac I would now eat this bread by choice.

That anaemic-looking stuff in a tin with a crust that looks like a particularly catastrophic outbreak of psoriasis? I've seen photos, and praised all the gods I don't believe in that I'm a coeliac in 2022.
DinosaursEatMan · 03/04/2022 18:58

@Pythonesque
I remember the gf breads from 20 years ago! And not fondly.
I think that Schar seeded is ok. I can’t tolerate Warburton's Tiger bread very well like a pp though think it tastes ok. I never got the love for Genius products.
I’m now in the early stages of attempting to make decent gf bread at home, though it’s an uphill struggle.

BabbleBee · 03/04/2022 19:01

Ok, so part baked is the way forward.

@Pythonesque I can only imagine!

I’m also learning quickly that some products that are labelled ‘gluten free’ are way more expensive than the non-labelled but gluten free anyway alternative. I hope that made sense!

I have never found a truly great bread replacement. I prefer gluten free bagels (New York Bakery). They freeze well and defrost for use in around an hour.

OnlyTheBravest · 03/04/2022 19:05

Forgot to say, aways lightly toasted. Makes any GF bread taste much better.

Usingit · 03/04/2022 19:07

I haven't really found a good bread but the Tesco free from carrot cake is very good and the Tesco free from hot cross buns were quite good. I think I might try the Schar bread mentioned upthread

Ilovefluffysheep · 03/04/2022 19:50

Warburton's soft white rolls are amazing. Expensive though (although that's unfortunately the case with most GF bread).

Warburton's tiger bread also good. Once cut, I tend to cut it all into slices and freeze.

Morrisons own brand soft white rolls aren't bad, and reasonably priced.

Someone else mentioned Becky Excell. Amazing gluten free blogger. She has a fantastic blog site with 100s of free recipes, a large FB group that she is very interactive on, plus 3 cookbooks that she's published in the last year. I think it's book 2 that has the bread chapter, and her bread is honestly incredible.

Can't say enough positive things about her, she has really revolutionised gluten free baking and cooking for literally thousands of us! She's a lovely lady, and has recently become an ambassador for Coeliac UK as well.

BabbleBee · 03/04/2022 19:58

Oh wow, Becky Excell page looks great!

I have banged on about her a couple of times on threads, but she is marvellous! Her recipes are simple, and they work. And even better, they taste normal, you'd never know they were gluten free.

She has been such a positive influence around gluten free eating, so I think it's really important to let people know about her. As I said before, her FB group is great, she interacts with everyone on the group and is so personable and supportive. When it was world book day recently, there were a few pictures shared on the group of girls who had dressed up like her to go into school. She was blown away, understandably so, but she really has been inspirational.

Sorry, I'll stop sounding like a walking advert now! But to anyone on here who is gluten free and hasn't heard of her, I promise her recipes will change your life!

I've never found a supermarket GF bread I like - I've had some nice ones from markets or bakeries online that do delivery but can only justify the latter as a treat.

Obviously it's not the same as bread but the Old El Paso Gluten free wraps are really good I think, very soft.

I'm diagnosed coeliac so no gluten at all and the only thing I really miss are biscuits and cakes. Trial and error has found all sorts of nice things but there's always something 'missing' satisfaction wise with the cake/bread/biscuit options. Fortunately I don't find I struggle with meals as most of what I ate previously was gluten free anyway as I'm quite a plain eater, eg salmon fillet and veg for dinner. I have also found that it's been a few years now and I've realistically forgotten how nice some things were and am used to the alternative.
