Got some small plants in pots/trays last weekend but held off planting them in the garden due to the frost forecast that we've just had. So they've been in the shed, whicb isnt ideal as the shed has no windows so is dark.

Ive pulled them out to sit on the path today to fet some sun and watered them, but im not very good at keeping plants in pots alive so want to plant asap.

Is it going to be too cold next week to plant them or are they ok going in now? And if they are ok now can i do it this evening or should i wait till tomorrow am so they get sunlight after going into the ground?

Am i overthinking it...?

I think this will depend a lot on what plants they are.

If you decide not to plant I would at least put them outside in the day then back in the shed at night as no light will kill them as effectively as cold.

Ecosralayce · 03/04/2022 15:35

definitely depends what they are, and whether they are hardy or not.
Where I live our last frost date is May 15th - that means up until this date there is a chance of a frost overnight. Anything very tender needs to wait until after that date to plant out.

I do t plant put until nearly the end of May. Until then everything is squeezed on to windowsills in cool bedrooms.

Im in the NE, had a look and rhe last frost date was 30th April. Not 100% sure what kinds they are, our neighbour bought them for us, they are the same sorts they have growing in their garden apparently.

I have lupins, petunias pansies and dianthus?

Every year I attempt to have a nice garden and it never goes very well... All thats survived from last year is one lavendar plant 🙈

I have always left planting out until after Whitsun. It is frustrating on a lovely day such as today though.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 03/04/2022 15:45

I agree with everyone else - May.
All I'm doing now is relocating established plants into new positions and getting some bulbs in. I'm also planting hardy Cordylines.
I'll wait until May for everything else and I'm ITCHING to get on with it!

Does it matter if some of the plants are a dent-ish size? Hang on ill take a photo of them!

No - the frost will get them no matter the size. Pinks might be ok - don’t have enough knowledge about those but would definitely keep the petunias and the rest indoors for the next few weeks. The lupins look lovely - I never have any luck with those as the slugs and snails treat them like a salad bar.

DragonOverTheMoon · 03/04/2022 15:57

I'm waiting till may, my windowsills are all filles up with seeds and seedlings. It's fustrating! Don't plant too early and kill them off tho.

Crazykatie · 03/04/2022 16:02

Lupins and pansies are OK but probably better to be left in pots to grow on for a few weeks

AlisonDonut · 03/04/2022 16:07

Lupins, pansies, petunias and dianthus, all should be hardy in the UK if that is where you are.

But they may have been grown in much warmer conditions to put them back in the shed at night and bring them out for the day for a week, and then they should be hardened off fine.

ChatterMonkey · 03/04/2022 16:07

Ok ill hold off planting for now, im just so anxious when they are in the pots as i never seem to be able to keep them alive! Theyve been outside in the sunshine all day today, ive taken them into the house now and are on windowsills in the kitchen.

How often should i be watering them while in pots...?

Put them back outside in the shed.

They don't need to be indoors.

When they are in pots, pick up a pot and if it feels light, water it. If not, don't.

Once you see the weeds popping up -wait a month, or at least a couple of weeks then plant yours.
But you could watch the weather forecast and lay fleece or something over them at night until the nights are warmer and frosts past.
