If you’re comfortably off, what are you doing to help with the cost of living crisis?

We are very lucky, esp these days, to be fine for money. I’m feeling increasingly concerned at how the cost of living crisis is affecting people. So far I’ve set up a direct debit to an anti poverty charity that gives crisis funding to families who need it. And I think I’ll do the same to my local food bank.

Any other ideas?

It is just wretched how this country is going. DD asked me this morning if we could put the heating on and when I said yes I almost cried that so many other families can’t this morning.

Volunteer at a food waste charity, continue charity donations.

Just set up a monthly d/d to our local foodbank. Used to just add stuff to my weekly shop but figure a regular donation is more useful. I'm a bit uneasy about the religious connection but they all seem to be affiliated with churches one way or another, better than not doing it I guess.

@fuzzyduck1

Not voting Labour - really don’t want to go down that rabbit hole. Not giving to big charities as most of the money gets skimmed off the top by the fat cats at the top or is wasted. Haven’t put up the rent for my tenants for 5 years even though the letting agents say put it up 5% every year. Support local charities. Did support food banks until one wrote to me asking for money and not food. Always buy local hate sole less supermarkets.
I second this. I have recently stopped working for a large cancer charity. The waste was shocking and I would never donate to them ever. Staff were poorly paid ( through partnerships) yet their own staff got paid hugely more for doing the same job. To think people did coffee mornings etc to donate to this charity and then seeing the waste and how the people it was meant to help went without was a rel eye opener. i will donate to smaller independent charities/ hoispices etc but not this big one.

I donate to our local food bank via direct debit (found drop off times too prohibitive) and also support the wonderful charity 52 Lives whenever I can - heartbreaking to read some of the stories on there, and some of the asks are so small (eg colouring book, kids PJs).

Seriously? Spending as much as I reasonably can without DH wrestling the credit card off me. I spend it locally in cafes and try and buy a lot from independent sellers on Etsy - recently paid £55 for a gorgeous, handmade wash bag from there. I could have paid £12.99 for something similar in TK Maxx, but it's really not the point.

I still have a Shellac manicure every 2 weeks and always tip generously. I've started having regular LVL lashes combined with a scalp & shoulder massage too. I know my salon is fighting hard to stay afloat, so it all helps.

We're continuing to eat out on a semi-regular basis so that people keep their jobs.

TeeBee · 03/04/2022 18:03

I've increased the wages of everybody I employ above the market rate. I don't want anyone struggling on my watch.
I buy from local independents rather than supermarkets.

doeadeeer · 03/04/2022 18:09

I've always donated £50 a month to food bank near me. I try to support local businesses and small enterprises. I donate my marketing services for free frequently to help small businesses. Family is hosting a Ukrainian family too so I'm helping to support there.

MissAmbrosia · 03/04/2022 19:01

I am setting up a direct debit to the foodbank in my home town. I fear donations will drop dramatically if people don't have much spare.

LadyHenryofRawlinsonEnd · 03/04/2022 19:05

I am dreadfully well off, and I am going to absolutely nothing, although I may consider donating to the Conservative part, to ensure that our.....sorry my standard of living continues to improve over the next few decades!

(joak!)

LadyHenryofRawlinsonEnd · 03/04/2022 19:07

I will try again with typo's fixed:

DD to foodbank. Letters to MP.

I joined many of the free stuff sites when DGD were babies 👶. Also when we could travel hotel toiletries and free samples of lotions & potions that I used to use when travelling.
Still reluctant to put payments online as a few years ago card was hacked after a 1st try of click & collect.
I give to food banks and use any points collected to purchase stuff.
