Help me plan my Peak District trip!

So I'm hoping to use the collective brain of mumsnet to plan a day out to the Peak District this summer. We're visiting Chesterfield to see how much we like it and whether we want to relocate up there. We've got a spare day, which we'd like to use to visit the Peak District and maybe go for a nice walk, have lunch at a nice pub. It would be me and DH, and 3yo and 1yo DDs, so pram friendly walks only! Could any of you give me some locations as a starting point/recommended walks that would be suitable?

We're also wanting to pop into Matlock for a quick visit just to see what it's like. I'm liking the look of the farm park, but can anyone recommend anywhere to stop and have lunch? Just looking for a good pub with some good beers and hearty food!

Hope that's enough information to go on, any starting points would be very welcome!

Chatsworth is one of my favourite places every. If you don’t have time to visit the house, the pubs and the farm shop/cafe on the estate will feed you well.

But I love the house and grounds! Loads to do!

With children that age I'd recommend the gate Inn in Tansley near Matlock.

Walks I'm not as good at, I'd say chatsworth as well or Shipley country park or even Markeaton park though may be too far south.

Bakewell is also lovely and worth a visit.

If you're going up that way look for Birds the Bakers. AMAZING cakes and bread. The Ashbourne one has a cafe I think.

Longshaw estate is where my parents always take my DDs out for the day, lovely walks. Magna near Rotherham is a good wet day place.

The Monsal Trail is fab, really flat and paved. Bring the 3yr old's balance bike and they'll love it!

Chatsworth is also great. The grounds are wonderful and they have the farmhouse & adventure playground for kids

The Monsal trail from Bakewell and Chatsworth House are my favourite places.

We went to carsington water years ago when kids were young. Lovely place.

If you’re relocating to Chesterfield and have kids/are thinking about schools, you need to be in Brookfield/Walton to the west of Walton Road - sorry that wasn’t what you asked. Definitely go to Chatsworth.

Windflower92 · 03/04/2022 11:16

Thanks all, definitely some good places to start with, I'll look them up! @Petronus, we're thinking of Walton, so will definitely be looking there first to see if it's as nice as everyone says!

@Petronus
That's about 15 years too late with the Brookfield appreciation!

I second the recommendation for The Gate at Tansley for lunch. Also, just to throw a curve ball, I moved from the west side of Chesterfield to Matlock pre-DC and never looked back, it's an absolutely fab town to raise a young family and still within easy reach of Chesterfield/Sheffield/Derby/ the M1.

Windflower92 · 03/04/2022 21:42

Thanks @NeitherNowtNorSummat. We liked the look of Matlock but thought it might be a bit quiet for a growing family. That could change when we see it though, you never know!

Theres lots of bike trails around and rentals where you could put a tag along on the back of hire bikes, the Monsal trail is great

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 03/04/2022 22:03

Matlock isn't too quiet for a growing family, it is great for teenagers to get a bit of independence without being in a big city. Lots of night life etc.

For a pushchair walk the Monsal trail and lunch at The Monsal Hotel, or more family friendly lunch at Hassop Station. Alternatively the High Peak Trail or Tissington Trail. The coach House Cafe at Tissington is good for lunch but there are lots of other cafes.

Hi @Windflower92 where did you end up relocating to?
