What are your 19-22 yr old student DCs doing about Dental care?

Are you continuing to pay for it?

They're sorting payment themselves?

They're having a few years off dental care until they starting to earn properly.

DS said there's no way he's spending his hard earned cash on his teeth vs great nights out, he cleans his teeth really well and unless he gets an abcess/ pain he thinks it'll be fine for a few years.

Personally I'd pay for him to get check ups then if you know he definitely won't. By the time he's leaving uni he should have matured enough to appreciate the benefit of going and can take over.

I told my DS to always book the next appt as he's leaving the last so then it's done.

Isn't he eligible for free nhs dental though? There's usually one at the university or that take on the uni students (there was at my son's uni). Then he doesn't have to pay at all. The challenge will just be getting him to go!

I stopped going when my parents stopped taking me and only went back as an adult because a filling had fallen out and I had a great big hole. Haven’t been since.

I thought check ups were free for under 25's?

Yes they could get free NHS dental care if on a very low income but they would have to find an NHS dentist. As far as I'm aware most don't bother.

Tee20x · 02/04/2022 19:36

I've paid for my own dental care since turning 18 - not had any issues luckily just paid for check ups. Though I almost had to have a wisdom tooth removed once :(

harridan50 · 02/04/2022 19:43

My dentist treated them as in education still until the end of uni
Now they pay for a yearly checkup themselves

peaceanddove · 02/04/2022 20:08

We pay for our DDs private dental care.

Gladioli23 · 02/04/2022 20:10

You can fill out an HC1 form which is assessed on your personal income (so student loans only) not your parents and get free dentists, opticians and prescriptions.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 02/04/2022 20:32

I managed to get an NHS dentist and free treatment via the HC1 form in about 2nd year of uni... Then moved and couldn't get an NHS dentist for years and years. Parents weren't paying for a private dentist for themselves so no chance they'd pay for me, plus as an independent adult it wouldn't have occurred to me to ask. Think I did ten years without a dentist, then managed to get one not long after dd1 was born and was dreading the check up, I hadn't been very good at looking after my teeth and already had a lot of fillings from teenage years. There was nothing wrong!

I didn't have a dentist for 20 years from the age of 18. A mixture of fear due to ill treatment by a dentist who was subsequently struck off and a lack of money. Then years on nhs waiting lists. (Over 8 years on the list.) Finally found myself an nhs dentist - I used to check every couple of weeks, discovered I have incredibly advanced gum disease. And then the dental practice closed. I'll be lucky to not lose any teeth in the next couple of years. Now back on the nhs waiting list.

If you can afford to pay I would. Or really hit home how important it is to have regular check ups. I have finally managed to get my children registered at a teaching hospital, but I've had many sleepless nights worrying about their future dental health (my issue is very likely genetic.)

We paid for ds when he was a student. Imo hygienist is more important than dentist. We paid for one annual check up and two hygienist visits per year. He graduated last year and now pays for himself.
Private dentist.

Monstermissy36 · 02/04/2022 20:49

My dentist charges for my 19 year old who is in his last year at sixth form. Apparently being 19 trumps being in full time education and he has to pay. He's said he won't 🙄 while he's still at college I will...

A3285633 · 02/04/2022 20:57

We pay for our DD private dentist. She’s left Uni and is now working, but we’re her parents and have more money than she has.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 02/04/2022 21:59

We are in Denplan so still pay for Ds aged 18 who is in his first year at uni. We will continue to pay until he is earning his own wage. He was assessed when he turned 18 to check the condition of his teeth to see if his premium was to increase. We all go to the dentist twice a year. Ds's appointments are booked for uni holidays.

waltzingparrot · 03/04/2022 04:41

Thank you all for the information on the HC1 form. I'll pass it on and hopefully he'll go then.
