Another one about the cold.

I’m sitting here FREEZING and just looking for advice for those who have heated throws and other ways to keep warm.
I have looked in Argos and they have heated throws at £70. Cheaper ones are all sold out so was thinking of getting one on credit. But they also have heated under blankets for £25, one of these would make more sense being £45 cheaper but does anyone actually sit with an electric blanket? Is it doable? And the cost to run are they really only about 1p a night?

Are they safe to have on all night?

Is it really that cold? I rarely have heating on in our house and never overnight. Nobody complains

I'd recommend an ordinary woolly blanket and a hot water bottle, the kind with a fleecy or furry cover as they stay warm for longer. You will be toasty warm.

Unforgettablefire · 02/04/2022 13:09

I mean through the day and early evening instead of putting the heating on.
My house is an old council house and with the price rises I can’t afford the heating, it’s just so cold though.

I wouldn’t bother with a heated throw. It’s much cheaper to sit with an ordinary throw and a hot water bottle.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 02/04/2022 13:12

All I use is a teddy blanket and hot water bottle. I'm always cold but lovely and warm doing that

EileenGC · 02/04/2022 13:16

I wouldn’t bother with that just for the day.

Are you wearing 2-3 layers of (warm) clothing and a warm dressing gown on top? Not appropriate for zoom meetings but during the evenings that’s what I wear when I get cold. Primark, M&S etc do cheap ones and they’re amazing. That plus fluffy socks and slippers on your feet.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 02/04/2022 13:16

I have the heated blanket form John Lewis. I don’t put my heating on at all most of the time. It costs pennies to run and they are lovely and warm. I have been telling everyone to get one.

They really are cosier than an ordinary throw and a hot water bottle - it still costs to boil the kettle.

An under blanket wouldn’t be as cosy - the throw is designed to be soft and warm, and to cover your body totally so you’re cosy throughout, creating pockets of warmth between you and the throw. I have mine on a one hour timer and that warms me for two or three hours.

I agree though that £70 is a lot.

I bought a heated throw from Amazon, was £35. Its great, nice an toasty, would recommend

DuckaLucka · 02/04/2022 15:05

I have both. The under one is wonderful to warm up my bed (I have covid and I’m currently in bed with it on!) and an over one on the sofa of an evening is divine.

coldandverytired · 02/04/2022 15:07

Check Aldi and Lidl, Aldi had reduced the remaining stock in store to £25 when I went in this morning (we already have 2 so I left them on the shelf!) and Lidl had some in a few weeks ago.

I lived in a very cold 20's house with no cavity walls and we had the heating on for 3 hours per day. The trick is to layer clothing especially on kids eg leggings under jeans, and fluffy blankets for all the sofas plus on beds, didn't have any electric blankets etc. I have tog rated socks and wear thjn ones underneath plus slippers due to having circulation issues. Fingerless gloves are good too. Despite the age and construction it's a lot warmer than the houses of our childhood, ice on the inside was common! My thermostat is set at 18 for when the heating is on.

I've moved now. Much newer house and the heating isn't even on now, still warmer than old house!

That depends on where your house is in the country and how well insulated it is surely? The UK has some of the most poorly insulated housing stock in Europe. My house drops to single figures inside in weather like this, it is single skinned, with no double glazing and the wind comes up through the floorboards. It's EPC is E. I am not sure how helpful it is to the OP to know that your house isn't cold when they is saying theirs is.
Unforgettablefire · 02/04/2022 16:03

Thank you all for the replies. I’ve just been to Lidl and it’s actually a lot warmer outside in the sun Grin will shop about for a heated throw now as once the winter comes the prices will no doubt rocket!

I got the Mia and Coco one on Amazon £37.99 at the moment and really snuggly even when not switched on.

Pixiedust1234 · 02/04/2022 16:29

I got ours from Dunelm as it was £10 cheaper than argos for the same one.

Howmanydaysuntilfriday · 02/04/2022 16:34
