Gross subject-Nose Bleeds

GlasswareisOverated · 01/04/2022 22:23

A few years ago when I was put into a higher dose of an antidepressant that I was taking, I had 15 nosebleeds in a three week period.
But they were disgusting and came with these massive (size of a tube of lip balm) blood clots that I would have to remove in order to get them to stop.
Has anyone else on here had this experience?

My DC had one of those, it was like a slug. I had to pull it out and it hurt when I was pulling.....

GlasswareisOverated · 01/04/2022 23:38

Slug is a very apt description, totally and utterly gross and it happened pretty much on every nose bleed during that three week period. Came off the higher dose of the anti-depressant (citalopram)and it's only happend once since.
I have always been prone to nose bleeds though.

Yes I used to have them a lot. It was gross. I was just outside the frequency required for cauterisation.

I don't often have nose bleeds of any type nowadays thank god.

I had cauterisation of one nostril, it was very painful indeed, I was meant to get the other nostril done but I decided that I wasn't going through that again.

I get frequent severe nosebleeds, and the fat slugs are grim. For me they usually slide down into my mouth. Bllleeeeuuuurrrgggghhhh.

GlasswareisOverated · 02/04/2022 20:52

I've started standing up as soon as one starts and that seems to help a lot in terms of how long they last/how severe they are.
When I was a kid the advice was head back wards (memories of blood going down my throat Gak) then they changed it to head forward.
Nowadays I stand up head forward and pinch the bridge of my nose very hard. It's now been a long time since I've had one lasting longer than ten minutes.

My ex dh suffered really badly with huge nosebleeds. He had 2 cauterisations and in the end an operation to stop it. Unfortunately it didn't ever clot....just bled and bled over work documents, meals, tents....ugh!

Tidypidy · 02/04/2022 21:08

We've been advised to give ds an ice cube to suck when he has a nose bleed. It does seem to slow them down.

Hospitalexpert · 02/04/2022 21:36

I know this very well. I have a genetic condition called hereditary Haemorrhagic telangiectasia HHT. My blood vessels don’t always form properly. Nosebleeds main symptom for most people though I’ve also had a brain AVM.

A good nosebleed for me is 10-15 minutes, up to an hour is quite usual and can be longer. I’m lucky and so far just three laser treatments and I’ve had one blood transfusion

I’m glad your bleeds were short term (and agree the slugs are yucky)

If anyone reading this has repeated serious nose bleeds do get checked out for HHT. If you have it you need screening for your lungs and different treatment for bleeds (not cauterising).

GlasswareisOverated · 02/04/2022 23:28

@Hospitalexpert if you have had children, did you bleed throughout labour?
I did with both of mine and I am convinced it is a sign of underlying issue.

Hospitalexpert · 03/04/2022 14:05

@GlasswareisOverated I don’t have children. Was told if I did become pregnant to mention it early.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 03/04/2022 14:08

Yes, also on a higher dose of antidepressants. It flowed out with huge clots for 45 minutes and my eldest DD called an ambulance when the blood started seeping out of my eyes.

Had to be cauterised and taken straight off the tablets.

What idiot told you that? It was in the Guide Handbook circa 1965 (I had a second/fifth hand copy when I was in Guides) telling you to lean forward to avoid it all running down your throat as part of the First Aider Badge. Pretty sure it was in the Brownie Guide Handbook of 1979 as well. And the 1966 St John Anbulance First Aid Book my older siblings used for Boys'/Girls' Brigade.

The clots are yucky but are your blood doing what it's supposed to do. Clotting.

Wildernesstips · 03/04/2022 14:25

I am a frequent nosebleeder and have had very long ones, including as pp said out of my eyes. I’ve not had the slugs before though.

It is the fleshy part of your nose that you should pinch though not the bridge.

Von Willibrand disease can be associated with nosebleeds, which might be why you also had an issue during labour.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 03/04/2022 14:49

I was also on citalopram and was advised that an effect on clotting can be a rare side effect.

Hospitalexpert · 03/04/2022 18:38

There is definitely still a lot of ignorance about dealing with nosebleeds. I am quite often told to put my head back by strangers who are well meaning (and very helpful getting tissues).

Saz12 · 03/04/2022 18:58

@Hospitalexpert - so do I!!! And agree that anyone with frequent unexplained nosebleeds should look into HHT.

Vaseline to moisturise nostrils can help avoid them. Apparently.

Bookridden · 03/04/2022 19:31

Wtf is this about blood coming out of your eyes? Have been lucky enough not to have a nosebleed for a while, but I think I would freak if it started coming out of my eyes. Do your eyes bleed separately? Where is the eye blood coming from?

It was pretty scary!

(I think) that your nose and sinuses link to tear ducts so I was pinching with head forward as instructed and the blood had nowhere else to go.

I looked up and my vision was bright orange. I turned to them 14yo DD who was the only person in the house with me and she just went "Jesus mum I'm calling an ambulance. There's blood coming out of your eyes!"

Thankfully it never happened again after that!!!

GlasswareisOverated · 04/04/2022 08:29

@TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo
That sounds horrifying. Very glad I have never experienced that.

Phos · 04/04/2022 08:35

I've had the blood out of back my eyes thing too, its to do with the tear ducts. I seem to go through phases of getting lots of them then nothing for ages. I had really bad ones as a child, the worst was when I was 8 and got taken to hospital when one had been going on for over 2 hours.

GlasswareisOverated · 04/04/2022 10:42

Von Willibrands is something I have looked into the in the past but beyond the nose bleeds and the bleeding during labour, I don't appear to have any blood clotting issues.
Regarding the tilting head backwards, it was the school nurse at primary school in the 80's who advised that.
Longest nosebleed I had as a child was around forty five minutes and the parent I was with (at a sleepover) was getting very close to calling an ambulance.

DS2 used to get some corkers until we had his nose cauterised. The mega clot thing was known as a sludge worm in this house.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 04/04/2022 11:09

Ds1 has always suffered with nosebleeds and gets huge "blood slugs" as we call them! His nosebleeds are due to seasonal allergies and colds. He is slowly outgrowing them.
