Do you freeze home made cakes?

Dd wants to bake a cake today (Victoria sponge) and what with trying to save energy and all that, I thought I’d put another cake in the oven at the same time and then freeze it.
Anyone got good suggestions for freezable cakes?

Traybakes, brownies, Victoria Sandwich will all freeze well. Cut into portions before freezing.

Just following as I'd like some ideas too. I always imagine that cakes would go soggy after being in the freezer but I've never tried it. I sometimes make a cake that lasts a bit longer like a ginger cake alongside a sponge. But then we just eat two cakes!

Fruit loaf/boiled type cakes. Slice then freeze, defrost when you only want just a slice. Also great warmed with some custard.

I freeze all types of cakes.
Any that need filling, just freeze and fill/ decorate on defrosting.
I often bake and slice into single portions, wrap in foil and take out for lunches.

Carrot cake is very good for freezing, I think most cakes can be frozen and then iced or decorated once they have defrosted

Sponge cakes freeze well, just put a later or parchment between pieces to freeze. Decorate when semi defrosted, I actually found it easier to crumb coat a frozen/partially frozen cake as it was more solid.

Yep, all cakes seem to work well in my experience!

Thanks for the ideas. Warming up and serving with custard sounds amazing on a freezing cold day like today.
Also what’s the best way to store in the freezer? Would they crumble or keep ok in a freezer bag?

I was googling this the other week as had same thoughts as you about being efficient with having the oven on.

Consistent advice was cling wrap tightly, them foil wrap and place in container to freeze. Let it defrost whislt still wrapped up.

I dont use cling wrap so did the above with reusable bags and tinfoil and worked fine.

Can also just do a sliced cake in grease proof in a tupperware and pull out a slice at a time

All cake freezes ok. Fruit cake does best..

ice/fill/decorate after defrosted though

I just wrap in foil but as halves in the case of a Victoria sponge. Store flat. Madiera or loaf cakes I cut and freeze in slices, wrap in foil and place in a labelled bag. Take out each piece as needed and use for packed lunches.

I own a café and do it all the time. As long as they’re undecorated they’re fine.

Yes otherwise we would be eating far too much cake to stop it going stale! It also means we can have different types of cake rather than having to finish them off first before baking again.
