Recommend shoes/runners for walking

I walk for an hour each day and my current Nike runners are quite battered and the right one seems to have collapsed a bit on the inside. So, time for a new pair. I'm a bit overwhelmed at the choice available! A couple of years ago I got plantar facilitis and it was agony so I'd like something with good support. I have a different pair of Nike that I wear just casually and I did a long walk in them once but they are definitely not suitable for a 'proper' walk. I was looking online at Skechers arch fit but although the blurb makes them sound brilliant, the reviews all seem to be just for casual wear. I don't have many actual shops nearby so would like to order online if possible, or if not then at least I'd like to have narrowed down what I want to look for if I do have to go to an actual shop. Would love to hear peoples' recommendations please. Budget up to £150 max

No suggestions (sorry!) but would be interested in this too.

New Balance running trainers are great for anyone who needs support. I run regularly and I over pronate, I wouldn't wear any other brand now.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/04/2022 14:18

Thanks @Monkeybutt1 I hadn't thought of New Balance.

My Nike trainers are getting rather tatty as well. Do the NB trainers give really good arch support @Monkeybutt1?
I tried some trainers on the other day, but as my Nikes are as comfortable as slippers now I struggle to find anything as comfortable (apart from Skechers). Having suddenly developed excruciating osteo arthritis in one of my big toes I am really struggling with footwear now.

I really like my Under Armour Charged for walking. Skechers give me plantar fasciitis 🙄

LittleDidSheKnow · 01/04/2022 15:04

I wear Nike AF1s... comfiest shoes I've ever worn.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/04/2022 15:28

See, I have/had a few pairs of trainers that are comfy enough to wear all day but not if you're going to go for a long walk. It's not so much how comfy they are to stand around in or even go shopping in for a few hours etc. it's for proper exercise walking and I find I need something different for that.

I've got Skechers run. I've tried their 'walk' but 'run' gives more support.

I don't think they'd suit an actual runner but for walking I find them really good (and very comfortable). I walk about 10k 4 times a week in them, as fast as I can.

randomsabreuse · 01/04/2022 16:00

What kind of walking? On or off road?

If off road I like Merrell, Salomon and my Mizuno Wave Daichi trail running shoes. The Mizuno shoes are for the more "off road" end of the spectrum ie up a big hill that's not wet enough to justify boots.

I wear superfeet Green insoles in the Mizunos but don't need them in the Merrells. Don't currently have Salomon but they've always been good for me...

These are the business: proper walking shoes and amazing for PF

I agree if you’re not walking on the pavement, trail shoes might be better.

I have some Inov-8 ones that I find good for hiking as well as running but most of the brands do them - New Balance, Adidas, Salomon.

AnybodyAnywhere · 01/04/2022 16:12

I admit they’re a bit pricey but Meindl Philadelphia are the only shoes I’m happy walking in. They’re really well made and last a long time, I’m on my 4th pair and they’ve all lasted at least 2 years….and I walk at least 40 miles a week on all terrain.

madmumofteens · 01/04/2022 16:24

I just got a new pair of Columbia peakfreak X2 out dry trainers for walking comfiest I have had to date thoroughly recommend 🥰

Giesswein merino wool runners

I wear mine a lot, even on off roady walks and really comfy. I have scarpa proper hiking boots I wear if it’s wet and thick mud.

Theawkwardblonde · 01/04/2022 16:31

Adidas ultraboosts. I do loads of walking (flat, countryside, mountains) and these shoes are fab for walking, as well as running. I own 4 pairs now! They're not the cheapest but they feel lovely to walk in.

Theawkwardblonde · 01/04/2022 16:33

Also Salomon trainers are great at enduring harsher terrain and weather. Super comfy and supportive too.

LouisaLovesMice · 01/04/2022 16:33

A vote for Salomon and Topo, both excellent. Walked fifteen miles in both and no sore feet.

Yes they do, I over pronate badly and have tried many different brands, I always go back to New Balance. They are the best in my opinion.
howardmoonseyebrow · 01/04/2022 16:35

Have a look at Brooks, they’re like slippers, I wear mine for running and walking

RampantIvy · 01/04/2022 16:37

Thank you @Monkeybutt1

ThatsNotItAtAll · 01/04/2022 16:38

Try proper walking shoes or boots.

I never understood why people insist on wearing running shoes for walking. It's like wearing a cycle helmet on a motorcycle or goal keeper gloves to keep out the cold IMO.

I have weird feet and my CMP walking boots are the most comfortable footwear I have ever owned once walked in. It's worth going for a walk just to have a reason to wear them. I walk 3-5 miles most days and about 8 once per week.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/04/2022 16:40

Some great suggestions here that I'd never even heard of, so thank you all.

I only ever walk on pavement.

I have never found a walking boot that was comfortable. I currently have some Skechers Trail shoes and they are comfortable for walking. We mainly walk off road, and they are comfortable for off road and road walking.

I find walking boots too tight on my ankles. I do have some that are years old, and since developing osteoarthritis just too uncomfortable to wear for any distance, so I prefer my walking shoes.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/04/2022 16:50

I really don't want boots, I appreciate they suit some people especially if you're walking on rough terrain etc but honestly for just walking the pavements where I live I'm happy in runners. In the summer months I like to wear shorts too and I'd prefer the look of runners with shorts (I know this isn't S&B but still!)

I run in new balance and have never had issues with them so now buy a pair to walk in as well.

I got a pair of sketchers a few years back which wore out really quickly and then gave me really bad back ache so I avoid them now.
