Stop making everything grey!

Just this really. As if the last couple of years haven’t been bad enough, everyone in my street is replacing their doors, windows, fences with grey ones. People I know have painted the entire interior of their houses in grey. Why? It’s the colour of gloom and joylessness. I’m sure it’s going to date horribly too.

OP posts:
jusdepamplemousse · 01/04/2022 10:17

Yes it’s a bit much and even as a trend has been over for at least a year or so now. Shame, as grey used with some thought and taste is very useful, but now it’s hard not to associate it with the grey monochromey thing. Honestly do not know what possesses people!

OohRahhMaki123 · 01/04/2022 10:18

You're not wrong OP, all-over grey already is considered dated I believe...

Having said that I do quite like a nice dark framed aluminium window.

But overall I love a dash of colour - my front door is bright green and I love it!

Cameliah · 01/04/2022 10:18

It stays clean longer and it’s neutral and modern. I like it and clearly so does everyone else.

girlmom21 · 01/04/2022 10:20

Don't worry about it ageing - it can be painted over.
Not a massive issue.

Neverreturntoathread · 01/04/2022 10:20

Agree OP!

Went to garden centre yesterday and every single piece of garden furniture was grey. So v v weird.

It's better than burnt orange creosote for sure

I hate those grey window frames. Make houses look dull and grim and will date incredibly quickly because they are supposedly on trend right now.

Another pet peeve is totally inappropriate styles of front doors for the age and style of house. Eg. 1930s semi with a cottage style composite door, or worse those horrible super modern door designs with a long vertical handle from top to bottom instead of just a door handle. Doesn't fit in with the house at all and looks naff.

StCharlotte · 01/04/2022 10:26

The main problem I have with grey exterior woodwork is that it just looks like undercoat and I want to ask "what colour is it going to be?".

There was a house on TV last night (Dream Home Secret Location I think it was called) which was entirely grey outside and in. And it confuses my brain when I suddenly see a yellow cushion!

But I can see it can look great and for a "fad" it's lasted a pretty long time so far.

Wellthisiscrapeh · 01/04/2022 10:29

There are a lot of houses on my street being done up and i’d say 90% of the new windows and doors being out in are grey.

The front doors all look like something out of Beetlejuice as well, these are 1930s semi’s it look ridiculous.

All the fences are grey, all the paving is dark grey.

That’s the doors I meant!

They have daft porthole windows in them, or abstract shapes.

ThreeRingCircus · 01/04/2022 10:37

Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen has coined it "the greynaissaince"

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/04/2022 10:39

What colour do you suggest I paint my battleship?

grey12 · 01/04/2022 10:39

I disagree OP 🤷🏻‍♀️ but then everything within measure

I really like grey doors/window frames in a white house. I think it looks really pretty and let's things like beautifully coloured flowers and shrubbery shine.

However when people have a whole grey look in their house is waaaay too much. Grey is supposed to be used as a neutral colour and then go wild with accents.

huffyhufferson · 01/04/2022 10:39

It must be like living in a battleship for a lot of people!

AlisonDonut · 01/04/2022 10:40

You are so right, everything should be painted black.

iklboo · 01/04/2022 10:41

My cousin's wife has decorated every single room - including kitchen & bathroom - grey. Not a single 'pop' of colour anywhere. Even the ornaments & towels / tea towels are grey.

tulips27 · 01/04/2022 10:41

Yes, also I'm so tired of all accessories being grey. I was looking for a new washing up bowl and dustpan and brush - could only find grey. I want white to go with my kitchen.

GoIntoTheLight · 01/04/2022 10:43

Yes! So boring. Of all the trends to take off, why such a dreary colour? We need more colour in the world.

SoupDragon · 01/04/2022 10:45

it’s neutral and modern

Rather than neutral and timeless.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/04/2022 10:46

I fucking hate grey. I loathe it.

I hate it when I am looking for things and it's the only colour I can find.

D0lphine · 01/04/2022 10:46

Sometimes grey window frames look fab, for example on a house made of grey stone with a slate roof.

But it's very much whether if it's in keeping with the vibe of the house.

For example red brick houses look horrible with grey doors/ windows.

Defo agree grey looks totally dated post pandemic. People are going for warm welcoming colour schemes with lots of indoor plants and natural textures.

The overly glam mrs hinch grey everything mirrored everything is hard and cold. Hate it

Hadenoughofbloodycovid · 01/04/2022 10:46

Well I don’t have anything grey, apart from a few t.shirts.
I’m still stuck in the land of magnolia with a few sage walls thrown in🤷‍♀️

Geezabreak82 · 01/04/2022 10:47

I'm totally on board with this! We used to have quite a bit of grey in the house pre-pandemic like most people, but I am so over it now and we're working through the house brightening things up. My two real grey bug bears are grey paint in the garden and the 'upcycling' projects where people paint beautiful wooden furniture boring flat grey.

Mrsmch123 · 01/04/2022 10:49

I like grey. Thinking of painting my fence a dark grey colour😁

Agreed - the grey window frames that are "on trend" now will look as dated as the dark brown 1980s ones in a few years.
