F*** baby has hit her head 😔

Was giving her a bath and she was playing with her duck and sort of lunged forward then jerked back and fell back right on her head. I may as well have not been there for all the use I was, she basically just slipped right through my hands as she was all wet 😔

The sound was awful, as it always is when something drops in the bath. She cried for a bit then was fine, played happily on her mat until bedtime, ate a snack, my dad is a HCP and he popped in to see her and said she seemed fine, she beamed up at him, no vomiting or lethargy etc.

But I just feel so horrifically awful about it. I've been so careful, always surround her with pillows since she has learned to sit etc and now this.

Please tell me I'm not a bad mum and she will be ok Sad

In the nicest possible way.

Parenthood is going to be a long and difficult journey for you if you dwell on things like this. This is minor.

You cannot possibly protect them from every knock and bruise, it doesn't make you a 'bad mum', if it did every single one of us would be a neglectful, bad parent. There will be plenty more bumps and bruises down the line Flowers

It's not babyhood unless you've bashed your head at least once.

Remember, baths are big and echoey, everything sounds louder in the bath.

Poor DD rolled off a lowish changing bench (about 18" off the ground) at the swimming pool when she was about 4mo. I felt terrible. No harm done.

Of course you’re not a bad mum, I’m glad you’ve checked her over. Just keep an eye on her, I’m sure she’ll be fine. My first rolled off my chest on the bed onto the floor, I cried more than her, she’s 20 now. Don’t beat yourself up over it.

Favourodds · 31/03/2022 23:22

You'll get through it. I remember how upset I was the first time my baby fell off the bed. At 18 months today, I barely looked up as she faceplanted off the sofa on some deranged Cheerio hunt.

You're not a bad mum. She just fell. It's fine.

SliceoQuiche · 31/03/2022 23:26

This will become a story you tell when they’re older; we’ve all done it, it’s part and parcel of having little ones!

Overtheroadroundthecorner · 31/03/2022 23:28

You’re not a bad mum, it will happen many more times, you will feel bad again. It’s part of parenthood.

I remember clearly the first time my baby hit her head. She was sitting in front of me on the rug and just lurched backwards. It was one of those moments that you watch seemingly in slow motion. The sound of head hitting the floor was horrifying and her head actually bounced off it! Me and her dad raced to pick her up. She whimpered a bit but I was inconsolable. My partner was laughing at me as I was distraught and he laughed so much our little one started laughing too. She was absolutely fine by the way but I certainly came off worse than she did.

She's learning to walk now (not quite there yet) and small bumps are inevitable on a daily basis. Today she was trundling along pushing her baby walker, stopped for a second then randomly fell sideways into a door. Toddlers are not indestructible but most of the time, for minor bumps, they bounce very well! It's not possible to prevent them all even if you're right next to them!

You're not a bad mum. On the contrary. You were with your child during bath time, closely supervising and within reach and tried to prevent this little bump. Trust me, you'll be more upset about it than she will be and come morning she's highly unlikely to remember it anyway.

Chin up mama - you're doing a great job! Flowers

Thanks for the nice comments Flowers

I know I cant wrap her in cotton wool but I just keep replaying the sound in my head Sad

You'll both be fine! DD fell off a step when I was changing her once when she was about 3 months. We have hard floors all over the house and the number of times she's hit her head. The worst one was when the kitchen floor was wet and she slipped and fell flat on her back. I could just see her little legs sticking out from behind the counter 😭 you get over it though. What looks like it would be really bad for an adult isn't as bad for a little one as they're so small they don't have so far to fall (that's what I tell myself anyway!).

My mum just informed me that she stood up on an airplane once with baby me in her arms and bashed my head straight into the overhead lockers. Said she felt sick but it turned out to be the first bump of many and I turned out okay.. ish...
