Mist Rising from Pavement

I am worried that I hallucinated.

Around 1.30pm soon after quite heavy rain/snow/sleet but in full sun, driving down the road and saw mist rising from road and pavement. I saw it in a few places, it wasn't exhaust fumes, it didn't seem to be linked to people and it seemed to move naturally with air movement.

Am I imagining things or is it possible?

It would have been the water evaporating in the sun. I sometimes notice steam coming off of the fences when they're wet and it gets sunny.

EducatingArti · 31/03/2022 17:21

It sounds like steam/condensation. Probably after the sun came out on very cold wet pavement?

Mooloolabababy · 31/03/2022 17:22

Yes I saw this earlier on when I was doing the school pick up around 3pm. Mist rising from the ground when the sun came out in between snow showers

Yes, heat, wet, condensation etc.

How old are you OP? I'm hoping young!

Tyredofallthis1 · 31/03/2022 17:26

@Bluetowelsandflannels I'm really old. In fact, I could blame the perimenopause.

I'm glad that I wasn't imagining it. I thought it only happened in early mornings and things like fields, not pavements.

Of course it’s possible Confused

chisanunian · 31/03/2022 17:35

We have fence panels that do this often.

gamerchick · 31/03/2022 17:37

It's just steam. We seem to be getting all the seasons in one day atm.

fourquenelles · 31/03/2022 17:37

It's the visual manifestation of evaporation and I think it is very cool to be able to watch it.

Yes, I used to see this on our fence especially on autumn mornings; after a dewy night.
PickAChew · 31/03/2022 19:22

This used to happen somewhere I worked. We overlooked a flat roof and the mist would swirl past the window.

DidWeHaveAWinter · 31/03/2022 19:24

Is this the first time you have seen this??

HirplesWithHaggis · 31/03/2022 19:30

We used to say it was the fairies baking. :)

Gregsprinkles · 31/03/2022 19:32

Yes of course it's possible!

You can also see the sea steaming in the autumn on those first few cold days when the water temp is warmer than the air temp.

eyeslikebutterflies · 31/03/2022 19:37

It's steam! Isn't it obvious? Freezing snow + sudden sun = evaporation.

BillMasheen · 31/03/2022 19:37

I live near a river and a small lake that are fed by groundwater (so at a constant temp irrespective of the season). We often get both the river and the lake steaming. Looks so eerie, even when I know the science behind it.

WhatIsThisPlease · 31/03/2022 19:37

Just steam. My decking does it all the time.

Flaunch · 31/03/2022 19:42

Presumably you studied the water cycle af school?

Tyredofallthis1 · 31/03/2022 19:48

I'd only ever seen it in the morning and on fields, never on pavements in the afternoon.

I'm glad that I wasn't hallucinating.
