Bought a new sofa and our cat peed on it

Any ideas what his issue is? Day 3 of the new sofa. Cat has been with us for over 11 years and has no medical issues, but has peed on a sofa previously as well (like 8 years ago) but he kept doing it for a long time. He is a crazy cat and although I love him dearly right now I hate the bastard.

What can be done? Anything to prevent this from happening again and again?

Apart from fashioning a new hat from your kitty, I don't think there's much else you can do other than ride it out.

Tiddles may well be attracted to the new wood smell ( I'm assuming your sofa has a wooden frame ) and is somewhat attracted to it. I'm also assuming that the wooden frame is made from pine ( which is like catnip) to them. It explains why they're attracted to Christmas Trees.

I think you'll just have to wait until the pine smell dissipates.

Tiddles might also be recognising the fact that a new piece of furniture ( read climbing frame!) has arrived and he/she may want it to smell familiar.

I'm sure this phase won't last.

Yeah it's vile, happened to me once.

I had to order a new seat pad.

If you can't, if it's an all in one type sofa, then I dont know what you could do apart from try some spray stuff or get rid and buy another new cheapo sofa like £200 from Argos type thing until you no longer have the cat.

Bio washing powder gets rid of the enzymes that makes cat wee smell which should deter him from being a repeat offender.

I feel your pain...not a sofa but a new mattress.

Cleaned it with various recommendations and eventually it did go. Can't say for sure which method worked though.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/03/2022 17:01

There are sprays that will clean and get rid of the spray. If the cushion covers are removable put a puppy pad inside between the cover an cushion. Only thing that stopped my girl was physically blocking access to it.

pumpkinpie01 · 31/03/2022 17:03

This is why we still have our old awful sofa , just can't trust our cat as he went through a phase of weeing on it . Use a cleaner that breaks down the enzymes, bloody cats 😫

Cats don't like change. Use a spray to break down enzymes or it will continue weeing there.

grey12 · 31/03/2022 17:08

Apparently if you get upset with the cat they will pee on more stuff Grin you need to give your cat a lot of love!!

TheHopefulMum · 31/03/2022 17:09

Washing up liquid tabs are great for cleaning fabric sofas, just pop it in some hot water and once dissolved wash the sofa. You can also purchase spray which is supposed to deter cats from spraying / weeing but I've never found this works.

MuggleMadness · 31/03/2022 17:12

Oh, no wonder you hate the little bastard today!!

But remember how much you love him really!!

Nothing to add to the advice though, sorry

Best of luck!!

We have a Dcat who has the same problem. Other than using a spray to get rid of stains/smells the only preventative we found was to put a throw on top of the sofa seat (AND DO NOT SIT ON THEM so they don't hold your smell).

We then scatter some of her dry food biscuits on top as apparently cats won't urinate where there is food. Good luck. We still struggle when she becomes stressed, like yesterday after a visit to the vet!

JadeSeahorse · 31/03/2022 17:20

Assuming your sofa is fabric, please go onto the Stressnomore website, check under homewares and look at the fabric stain remover. Dried in stain remover should be ideal for what you need!

ClemDanFango · 31/03/2022 17:23

Territory marking? Do cats do that? Or punishment for splurging on yourself instead of installing a kitty kingdom where he can lord it over you all even more so than now.

balalake · 31/03/2022 18:07

Hope you find a solution.

The cat asks why they were not consulted beforehand about the change of sofa.

Thelnebriati · 31/03/2022 18:52

Maybe he's concerned it doesnt smell right, it hasn't picked up the home scent yet. Rub a cloth over him then over the sofa, and hang sheets or towels over it.
