DD is 17. Studying at college and working 2 part time jobs (soon to give up one of them).

She's been taxed approx £60 on her earnings of just over £300 (for the month) at her second job.

Job 1 is 4 hours per week - £20
Job 2 is 18 hours per week - £83.16

She's never been taxed for job 1.
Her tax code for job 2 is 'BR' (basic rate?)

I assumed she wouldn't be earning enough to pay tax?. She's spoken to her manager who assures her it's correct and she's been taxed due to her working 2 jobs.

Luckily she's giving up job 1 this week. The hours from job 2 will also fall to 16 now she's completed her training.

Is is correct? Google is sending me in a loop and confusing me.

Any help would be appreciated please.

Yes that's correct but she can claim the overpaid tax back at the end of the tax year.

Thank you. So how would she go about that?. Is the end of the tax year April 5th? Thank you.

I think this does happen automatically if you have more than one job. It happened to me when I did 2 part-time NHS jobs for different Trusts - HMRC helpfully applied my tax free allowance only to the one I did about 4 hours a month and charged full tax on all my earnings on my main job. It was easier than I expected to challenge and change. If she is only doing job 2 from now on she obviously won't be earning anywhere near enough to pay any tax - so once the allowance is applied to that job she shouldn't pay any more - and should get any overpayment back at the end of the tax year.

If I were her, I'd phone my tax office and get them to adjust my tax codes for each job if I didn't want to pay any more unless earning the full amount. What's already been paid should come back to her in the next tax year - although, mine took seven months. If she wants it sooner, she should phone them in April/May to discuss what needs to be done.

Brilliant. Thank you all 🙂

She will get a P45 for the job she is finishing, then a year end P60 for the second job.

HMRC will get copies of these and eventually provide a tax refund, but it may not be for a few months.

To speed the process up, she can look online for a tax refund request form and fill it in with the figures off the P45/P60, she should then get a refund fairly quickly.

Her tax allowance will move to second job automatically when she finishes the first one.

Brilliant thank you. Not holding my breath for her p45 though. Not the most organised of work places (hence she's leaving!)

It will be credited back, they have to use br until the new code is issued
