A boring thread about Kindles

I much prefer proper books but on holiday, I get through a book a day so I can't carry them all.

I had an original Kindle way back in the day (when they first came out) and it does still work but there are a number of issues with it. It's black and white: I like being able to see the colour thumbnails of book covers to help me remember which was which. It's not touchscreen. It's a ball-ache to connect it to WiFi.

I also have a Kindle Fire which addresses all these issues but it's a shiny shiny screen so highly reflective in bright sunlight, making it a strain on my eyes and hard to read.

So is there a Kindle that is colour and touchscreen and WiFi friendly but with the matte, non-backlit screen of the original Kindle?

Sadly, no. I have a Kindle Paperwhite which is all the things you mention, (touchscreen, etc) but it's not in colour. Other makes may make a colour 'print' option, but not Kindle.

I've had/used mine for years and it's never let me down. I'm an avid reader and wouldn't be without it.

I love my Paperwhite, but it is b&w.

There are quite a few colour e paper tablets that would tick all your boxes: goodereader.com/blog/electronic-readers/the-top-5-color-ebook-readers-of-2021

Just download the Kindle App on your smartphone and read from your phone

I love my kindle paperwhite and use it every single day. Has all the features you are looking for except colour, I know what you mean about the covers the sort of blur into one in my memory on a kindle whereas I remember paper books alot easier!

Kindle app on phones is in colour but I can't relax reading on my phone!

MossyBottom · 29/03/2022 22:19

I don't think there is what you are looking for, kindle fire isn't an e reader, it's a tablet.

Can you download the Kindle app onto your phone them you can browse your library in colour, then read it using a kindle ereader? I love my paperwhite, but apparently the cheapest kindle is pretty much the same as the paperwhite (don't think it's waterproof).

I use a kindle fire to read at night and set it on the blue shade setting which takes the brightness away from it. It's not much good for reading in bright sunlight though. You need the paperwhite for that. The advantage of the kindle fire is that you can use your library card on it and not pay for books!

I have the kindle paperwhite for reading books and a kindle fire for my knitting patterns. I wouldn't want to read books on the fire. The paperwhite is amazing.

Actually it was Kindle Fire in the early days; I have one. Amazon then separated them into 2 product lines: Kindles which are e-readers with some internet connectivity, and Fires which are tablets which one can also use as am e-reader with the app on it.

Proper colour (non shiney) ereaders are very expensive and the reviews I've read suggest they need more work.
Gonna bang on about libraries now, but I would always recommend a kobo, so you are not tied to amazon and can benefit from all the free stuff your local library has to offer. Lots of them use Libby or borrowbox, both have apps you can use on your phone to manage your account and keep track of your titles. You can read on your phone too of course, but it is so much better on a proper reader.

Thank you all - some great information.
I do have the Kindle app on my phone for if I have to wait in the car for the DC etc but it has the whole shiny / reflective issue that the Kindle Fire has. 😕
