Anyone else always getting static shocks?

MomOfCritters · 29/03/2022 16:17

Just that really, just out curiosity I want to see if it's common, it drives me insane as it always happens to me, I feel like a right weirdo at the shops as I'm terrified of touching anything metal, my hand actually pulls back, I even use a teddy key chain to push buttons on lifts, anyone else this bad?

Wellthisiscrapeh · 29/03/2022 16:18

Me.

All the time. If I get a lift, I have to press the buttons with my elbow or it’s static shocks all the way.

I’m always shocking the baby.

I hate it.

Daffodil6784 · 29/03/2022 16:19

Yes me! Cars, lifts, escalators, kids after being on the trampoline.
Do some people suffer more than others, and why?

pastabest · 29/03/2022 16:19

I get it if I wear particular shoes/ clothes.

It's probably something you like wearing a lot that is causing it.

TonTonMacoute · 29/03/2022 16:21

Synthetic fibres and shoe soles definitely make it worse. I used to wear fleece a lot and it drove me mad.

It's also been very dry recently and that makes a difference too.

Eloise666 · 29/03/2022 16:23

Not as bad at that, but I have taken to pacing up and down while on the phone wearing sheepskin slippers on carpet and have found that I’ve been electrifying myself frequently - it’s not nice tbh!

thenightsky · 29/03/2022 16:24

Yes me. I'm terrified of opening metal filing cabinets and cupboards in the office at work. Especially as they stand on nylon carpets. I try to wear all cotton clothing, but still I get that awful crack and flash that makes my finger joints ache. I always get a shock off DH when we kiss goodbye in the mornings too.

RoxieLoxy · 29/03/2022 16:24

Yeah it'll be your shoes. Also I worked out a great trick for not getting a shock from my car every time I got out. In case it helps anyone else - touch and keep hold of an outside metal bit of your car before you step out of it. E.g. hold the bit to the right of your door and don't let go until both feet are outside and on the ground. I can do it without looking mad now Grin

Works a treat. I hated the shocks but never get them now (from cars).

RoxieLoxy · 29/03/2022 16:25

Ps you only need to use one hand. It's easier than it sounds haha

I was just going to post that too. My car is quite low, so I grip the metal sill and hold on tight until both feet are on the ground.
underneaththeash · 29/03/2022 16:34

I'm very staticy too. Unfortunately, I'm also an optometrist, so have to earth myself before I touch anyone's eye.

I zapped DH so badly a couple of weeks ago that it sparked.

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 29/03/2022 16:36

Yup. I'm awful, especially on the treadmill, the kids often sneak up in me to give me a shock while I'm running!! And the supermarket!! I find myself earthing myself or bracing myself for a shock frequently. Annoying

grey12 · 29/03/2022 16:48

Terrible the last few days!!!!!!

ALongHardWinter · 29/03/2022 16:52

I frequently get electric shocks from supermarket trolley handles. I also get one when I stroke my cat's ears!

RoxieLoxy · 29/03/2022 16:57

@thenightsky I just wish I'd discovered that years ago!!

Anyone else got artifical grass? That's awful for giving static shocks. Don't get it. You're welcome Grin

ponkydonkey · 29/03/2022 17:00

I used to get this all the time, then I discovered walking bare foot on grass and gardening it's almost like you are grounding yourself

Synthetic carpet is a bit of a trigger and plastic soles shoes!

Thank you. That's a brilliant tip. I get a shock every time I leave the car. Am definitely going to try this.
2tired2bewitty · 29/03/2022 17:09

I used to get shocks off all sorts of things and, as pp have said, hated touching metal things. It’s definitely better now that I don’t spend 8 hours a day in the office, though whether that’s the carpets, not sitting next to lots of electrical equipment, not getting on the tube or wearing slippers all day I don’t know.

EleanorDeCleaner · 29/03/2022 17:10

Always been really staticky, and although some shoes are worse than others at generating static, I can spark off anything metal in shoes or no shoes. Definitely hang on to a metal bit of the car before touching my foot to the floor when getting out.

I just procured a string curtain thing for my office doorway to block the worst of the sun glare while being able to leave the door open, and it's got stupid bits of foil running through it. Even if I've been sitting still the bastard thing gives me a huge cracking shock when I touch it. I'm so over it, even the dog is scared of me because I shocked him when I touched his face adoringly recently. Sad

user1498572889 · 29/03/2022 17:14

All the time. My daughter complains every time I touch her I give her a shock. It happens on door handles card machines everything 😂

spiderlight · 29/03/2022 17:19

Yes! From the car (you can literally see the arc sometimes), from the hoover, from practicxally everything I touch in a supermarket, even occasionally from the dog! I have no idea why.

midlifecrash · 29/03/2022 17:23

I get this, I thought it was just in Peter Jones, then our office got the same kind of metal door handles. Have to wrap my hand up

4theanimals · 29/03/2022 17:25

I only get them from my car! I’ve developed a habit of tapping it before I touch it.

hedgehogger1 · 29/03/2022 17:28

Me. I bought myself lovely new slippers and they must be incredibly insulaty.

LadyLolaRuben · 29/03/2022 17:32

Yes me too. And apparently it makes you more prone to shark attacks. Worth knowing if you end up overboard Grin

PeskyRooks · 29/03/2022 17:32

Yes I frequently get shocks! Especially if I wear my skechers go walks. I got quite a bad one off the fridge in tesco it actually made the cracking noise.
I refuse to lift the kids off the trampoline unless they've touched the edge first!
