Time for a big bed?

I considered posting this in the ‘sleep’ section but it seems a bit quiet, so hoping I’ll get more responses here…

My DS (21 months) is not a great sleeper. He will go to sleep in his cot, in his room, and sleep for 2 - 4 hours, but after that initial sleep, he wants to be in the big bed with me & DP. If I try and keep him in his cot he wakes with increasing frequency and I end up exhausted. If I put him in the big bed he sleeps quite well but DP and both end up with back ache and I spend most of the night awake, checking that he’s ok.

So my latest idea to try and get us all a bit more sleep is this…. Eldest child currently has a bunk bed that can separate into two single beds. The bed that is currently the top bunk has got a rail around it to stop you rolling out. My plan is to separate the bunks and put the one with the rail in DS’s room instead of his cot. I’m hoping that it would be big enough that I can fall asleep with DS if needed, but also sneak out quite easily once he’s asleep.

I’m just a bit wary of a few things, so wondering if other parents who have already made the transition to a ‘big bed’ can advise…

  1. If he can get out of bed will it make bedtime an impossible nightmare?
  1. Does your child tend to get out of bed in the middle of the night?
  1. Is there any chance that the angelcare motion sensor pad will work under a full sized single mattress (very anxious mummy!)?

Obviously we will need a good secure gate on his room and make extra-sure it’s all toddler proof. Is there anything else I need to consider? Or is it a silly idea and I should stick with the cot?

The transition from cot to bed is always a bit of a nightmare. At some point they realise they can get out, so they do.

Then the novelty wears off and everyone gets to go to sleep again. It'll take a little while, I definitely would recommend making the change on a Friday night.

We did it when DS was nearly climbing out of his cot and started with a mattress on the floor. He did roll out but only onto the rolled up duvet by the side of him. He got the hang of it pretty quick.

Good luck OP Smile
