bigyellowTpot · 28/03/2022 20:55

I have 2 dcs ages14 and almost 10. And I have no idea what either of there first words were i just cannot remember and from what I do remember it was just babble anyway. youngest dc asked me today what their first word was so i told him I didn't know, apparently all mums remember their babies first words and I'm a bad mum for not remembering!! 🤣Anyone else not remember their dcs first words.

Both mine have baby books where we wrote down the first words, when they sat up, walked etc.

I love reading my book my mum did for me.

MintyMoocow · 28/03/2022 22:01

I am deeply ashamed to say that DD2’s first word was “ketchup”.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/03/2022 22:07

DD1 its easy to remember as the HV put her 5 words into her red book at the 2 year check.

I'm pretty sure DD2 was born talking as she hasn't stopped since.

DD's was no which still is quite representative of her tbh. DS's was cat.

pronxcessxo · 28/03/2022 22:11

DS was 'hat' aged about 9 months .. he'd put various toys on his head and say 'haaaaa' which was absolutely adorable

Duracellbunnywannabe · 28/03/2022 22:11

I can remember DD1 ‘cat’ but I have no ideas for DD2 and she is only 2.

mistermagpie · 28/03/2022 22:21

I have three kids and they all just kind of went from babbling to talking in a gradual sort of way. I don't think there was one day that they couldn't talk and then the next they said 'banana' or whatever. I think that's quite common.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 29/03/2022 16:44

DS is only 2.5 but his first word was 'Minnie" which is the dog's name. He was trying to call her over to share his lovingly prepared BLW lunch with her. Hmm

Knife in the heart to the other dog who regards himself as a third parent. Minnie DGAF.

JenniferBarkley · 29/03/2022 16:47

I've never really been sure of mine. They move from babbling to speaking and I never felt sure when the actual first word was.

LostOrFound · 29/03/2022 16:52

DS1 I have a detailed list of all his firsts - a bit PFB and he was also a late starter so I was paranoid about recording stuff to take to his developmental checks.

DS2 not a clue! Blush

Tertius3 · 29/03/2022 16:57

I can’t remember either. I feel I should make something up

teaspig · 29/03/2022 17:01

Eldest was fuck but he meant truck others were either mama or dada

liquidrevolution · 29/03/2022 17:02

'mama' not dada as told to me by various people would be the first word. Helped by the fact DD is called Emma Grin.

I dont remember many other of the early words but one of the last cute things to go was 'drinky' for thirsty. I didnt correct it at all and she dropped it after starting school.

I think I'm going to use drinky when I'm old and gaga.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 29/03/2022 17:25

My DD has only just turned 2, but i already can't remember.
I think it was 'bear'. If she ever asks, I'll have to make something up.

Hm2020 · 29/03/2022 18:26

My sons first word at around 9 months was our dogs name the shocking part was he paid actually no attention to the dog at all and mainly ignored her until she passed years later.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 29/03/2022 18:27

Never remembered first this or that, if I had concerns about their development at the time I raised it with the HV. I have plenty of memories and anecdotes of them saying or doing X, Y and Z which they find quite interesting and amusing but I don't see why people place quite so much importance on recording "firsts" really (unless it's a huge achievement eg in a very premature baby). They're so nuanced in babies - "oh was that an actual word or was he just trying the sound out?" "aah, he just smiled at me! Oh no I think he was forcing a fart out" "think he was trying to walk then, maybe" but you're not quite sure.

Someone got me a baby book but I filled in the first son's date of birth and then forgot to fill any more. Sort of glad I didn't waste the time really because neither of my sons is remotely interested in what or when their first this or that was.

Scarby9 · 29/03/2022 18:33

My first word was 'Teddy'.

I know this because y mum kept a little notebook each for me and my brother in which she noted important milestones - birth time and weight, first steps, first day at school, all vaccinations, mumps, first period etc.

She handed these over to us when we got our first jobs and left home.

Have either of us kept up the record? No!

Would it have been a useful thing to have continued it? 100% yes.

My mum has dementia now and remembers none of these things. I am so glad she wrote them down.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 29/03/2022 20:38

I feel horribly guilty because I remember dc1 first word but none of the subsequent 3dc 😱

Greatoutdoors · 29/03/2022 20:43

DS1 was ‘light’. He loved it when we turned the lights on and off, or any toy with lights so we took him to Blackpool Illuminations and blew his mind 😂

DS2 was ‘birdies’. Clear as a bell. He used to love standing at the patio doors watching the birdies in the garden ❤️

soulinablackberrypie · 29/03/2022 20:46

I know the first word we realised DS1 was using consistently for the same thing was "da-DAH!" which meant duck. He'd been saying it for quite a while before we sussed it though. I can't remember any of DS2's early words - the perils of being a DS2 with a small age gap!

Deathraystare · 31/03/2022 09:15

Mine was "broken" according to my dad! The tv was broken. Probably next door's. I remember dad mended their tv once.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 31/03/2022 09:21

I wrote it all down in a baby book so I can’t forget! DD’s first word other than mama and dada was England Grin (it was a World Cup year, we’re not crazy patriots).

The first time she put 2 words together was at 12 months when she started saying “all gone!” When she didn’t want to eat any more of her meal!

My dad’s first full sentence back in the 1940s was “I’ve got two fucking legs!” Bit of a family legend, that one!

JoeGio · 31/03/2022 09:24

With my PFB I wrote down all his new words and when he learned them, there were about 120 on the list when I realised I was being crazy and stopped Grin
I don't know what DC2s first word was Blush

MadameDragon · 31/03/2022 09:27

It’s not always clear cut. For my first child it was, but my second produced a variety of word like sounds that weren’t clearly anything all at the same time. Much later I realised from a video that one of them was hello, so I will tell him that was his first word. It might be true.
