It has finally happened... a disposable nappy got in with the laundry.

I'm absolutely raging. DD(2) woke up at 4.30am. I went to pick her up and noticed the outside of her sleeping bag was wet. I changed her nappy and babygrow then put her in bed with us. She didn't go back to sleep until about 6.30 then woke up at 8. All morning she's been whinging constantly, no matter what I do. I just went to empty the washer of her wet bedding and it's full of gel and fluff. Yep, a nappy had got in with the washing. It's a TERRIBLE state. I've just thrown the lot on the kitchen floor in despair and come to calm down. I don't know if I should wash it all again or just give everything a good shake. Urgh.

Has anyone else been unfortunate enough to experience this? What did you do to rescue the laundry?

I did it a couple of times but the nappy (pull up) didn't disintegrate at all! I only noticed when I went to hang up some leggings and they had a pull up inside. I'd shake off what you can and rewash

I had it happen to me on more than one occasion. I just used kitchen roll and scooped out all the bits then did a rinse and spin cycle to clear any other bits.

Yes, I'd shake off and rewash (quick cycle). I find hanging stuff out on the line helps to get rid of debris left on clothes (at least it works with tissues).

Salt. Run a wash with a mug full of cheap table salt. Should dissolve the gel.

Tumble drier!

Even just the 10 minute "cool down" bit at the end seemed to work.

Sorry meant to add, take bedding outside and give it a really good shake then give it a quick wash cycle and if possible tumble dry as this will get the little bits of fluff out.

Hugasauras · 28/03/2022 12:35

I've done this more than once as DD takes off her PJ bottoms and night pull-up in one and sometimes put both in dirty clothes basket Blush but never had them disintegrate, just go really gross and saggy and full of water. I'd just get off what I could and rewash! Washing remedies all manner of sins.

JuliaSways · 28/03/2022 12:37

Just a thought - when you get a chance check the debris filter (usually at the bottom of the washer somewhere) as it will have some of the gel etc caught in it and will need clearing - have a dirty towel ready to catch the excess water.

Oh there's nothing like the fun of a stray nappy in your washing when you're already run off your feet. I've done it a couple of times. Shook all the washing outside, rinse out the drum, then back in for another wash. Pain in the bum!!

Squiff70 · 28/03/2022 13:16

Thank you all for the advice! I tried muttering a dozen profanities under my breath but it didn't resolve the problem(!). I shook as much off as I could, tried in vain to clean the washer drum and gave up, bunging the washing in again. Meanwhile, DD was yelling. I realised it was about half an hour past her usual lunch time so I've abandoned the clean-up to feed her.

I am failing at mumming today.
