Ashes at airport? What to do?

Hoping someone here knows please as has done the same.

Taking ashes of a very close family member through Heathrow tomorrow to their final resting place.

We've got all the paperwork sorted and the ashes are approximately packed/sealed.

But the part I'm not 100% on is what's best to do when taking them through security?

They're in a clear bag, in a cardboard box and will be in my carry on as advised by the airline.

So should I get the box out before I put everything through the scanner? Shall I tell them that's what the box is as I do that? Or do I need the paperwork to hand before that?

I know I'm overthinking but I want to cause the least distress/awkwardness for myself and anyone else involved/around.

I've taken ashes internationally this way. The security asked me to tell them what I had with me when I hadn't. They were really respectful and nice about everything- didn't really want to look through my bag once I had told them what I was carrying. It was an awful lot easier experience than I was expecting. Hope everything goes well for you.

What I meant to say was I would mention the ashes to the security when you get there and ask them what they would like.

I did this, have it in a separate bag so when you take it out your main bag it's not obvious as to what it is, then just tell security.

I had the paperwork in my hand and informed the scanning team as I put my carry -on in the tray .
Regional airport , not Heathrow, but dealt with very respectfully and sympathetically.
Hope all goes well for you . 💐

Thanks so much everyone. Really calmed my nerves already.

Glad to hear it's always been an easy process.

In a separate bag is a great idea! Will go for a carrier bag of their favourite shop. They'd like that Grin
