Where can I buy DD a dress for prom that isn’t a ‘prom dress’

TheFootballFactory · 26/03/2022 20:58

She doesn’t want an actual prom dress per se

And nor can I afford one (looking at YOU, friend, who has just bought a £300 dress which needs adjustments!!)

Budget around £60 max. Bit cheaper would be better as she’ll probably need shoes too.

ASOS have a bridesmaid section, which are reasonably priced and would be suitable for prom xx

Watapalava · 26/03/2022 21:01

I’d look at past photos and past proms

I’m out school it’s a huge event with kids posting pics all over social media

The dresses are all lovely but traditional prom dresses. Unless your dad is very confident with an individual style I’d get a second hand prom dress rather than a cheaper ‘nice’ dress that stands out hugely on the day as being ‘less special’

What's her style? What does she want to wear?
Would Monsoon/Phase Eight dresses be too frumpy for her age? Zara? River Island? A lot of nice frocks on the high street?

Watapalava · 26/03/2022 21:10

For high street I’d go Lipsy

TheFootballFactory · 26/03/2022 21:13

Thanks all Smile

She definitely doesn’t want a ‘proper’ prom dress. I’ve asked her a few times to confirm this and to make sure she won’t feel odd-one-out if everyone else is wearing one. Tbf she’s never been one to be bothered about following the herd in that respect (but neither is she someone with ‘truly individual’ style)

She doesn’t want “puffy, sequiny, long or flowy”

She is open minded re colour. She doesn’t mind long and fitted (eg with a slit leg) but likes the idea of midi/body con

I will get looking at your suggestions, thanks

My daughter is borrowing a lbd from me, and wearing it with sparkly trainers. All we’ve bought are new glittery laces!

pinkprettyroses · 26/03/2022 21:21

SHEIN.

MarmiteCoriander · 26/03/2022 21:24

What size is she?

Star21 · 26/03/2022 21:26

My daughter’s dress was from Lipsy and as nice as any of the expensive dresses.

TheFootballFactory · 26/03/2022 21:28

Lipsy is a great shout 👍

She’s a tall size 8 (maybe even 6 if it’s generous sizing)

Bias-cut satin slip dresses are very in. Zara has them, as do ASOS and myriad others I’m sure.

sophienelisse · 26/03/2022 21:33

Boohoo

Okbutnotgreat · 26/03/2022 21:35

Dd had a Lipsy dress from Next Directory. Cost about £80 but lovely and she’s worn it a couple of times since. She looked amazing at the prom, much better than the ball gowns that so many were wearing.

Eyeplayer · 26/03/2022 21:35

Tkmaxx
Debenhams (still online)
Quiz

WelcomeMarch · 26/03/2022 21:36

At DS’s school, the in thing seemed to be to buy as cheaply as possible from a charity shop and then ‘arrive’ ceremonially by wheelbarrow, dump truck or space hopper.

Several of the girls wore suits or dresses with doc martens.

Twas good fun.

pointythings · 26/03/2022 21:45

You definitely don't need a ballgown.

DD1 wore a Goth type outfit - high/low corset dress in black and gold, mesh tights, heels she already had. She looked like a Victorian music hall artiste and turned heads.

DD2 wore a just below knee black bodycon dress with red roses and scarlet heels, also turned heads. The Prom Princess dress is not mandatory, nor is it very interesting.

Silk Fred?

mum11970 · 26/03/2022 21:47

AX Paris have all styles of dresses. My dd got a dress from Boohoo for less that £30 for her prom.

MiniDaffodils · 26/03/2022 21:50

Next.

Minniem2020 · 26/03/2022 22:07

DD got her dress from ASOS for £20 in the sale, £20 of alterations and she was good to go.
One of her friends wore a lovely jumpsuit as she didn't want a dress at all

HappyLondonWoman · 26/03/2022 22:08

DD's came from TKMaxx. Cost about £30. Turquoise sequinned knee length. Looked fab!

Mycatisfabulous · 26/03/2022 22:11

A shop.

margotnotrobbie · 26/03/2022 22:14

Have a look at quiz clothing. Their prices are quite reasonable and their dresses are lovely enough for prom Smile
