My DS is also doing art GCSE. How about a voucher for some art supplies - Hobbycraft, amazon etc?
Or a Lego architecture set?

Blinkingbatshit · 26/03/2022 17:57

Oh wow thanks - just looked at the Lego architecture sets, they’re amazing… but sadly over budget (will save for a ‘big’ b’day!). Would rather get something more tangible than vouchers if poss!

There is so much you can buy for an artist that I would recommend asking what he wants. People keep buying me what I already have.

My ds is also doing an art GCSE and loves art but has loads of stuff already, so a voucher would be useful as he could add to his collection of pens/paints/paper/ or whatever art medium he prefers.
Art supplies can be expensive!
However I’m sure he has other interests other than art or architecture.
Vouchers for costa, local cinema, Nando’s,…..

My son also loves plants so would love a plant as a gift!!

If you're near a city, membership to a museum or gallery for entry to exhibitions, eg Tate membership. Or you could take him on a trip to see several shows somewhere.
If he's planning on studying art or architecture,or just is really interested, you could buy a subscription to a related journal or magazine. Eg Art Review.
With materials, I agree with PP that vouchers probably best unless you're confident you know what he'd like and uses- or unless you're an artist yourself and have an informed idea of a new material he may enjoy trying.

What is your budget

RedskyThisNight · 26/03/2022 18:14

I'd suggest you really need to find out what sort of art he prefers.

If he likes painting then a set of "posh" acrylic paints and a variety of brushes might go down well, but if he hates painting and likes drawing then he might prefer a sketchbook and selection of pencils .. equally if he enjoys embroidery he might like a range of materials, threads and hoops in a nice set ... you get the idea.

My DD has loads of art materials she doesn't use because well meaning people have noted that she is "arty" and haven't bothered to enquire further.

Analinky watercolours are fabulous, such great pigmentation and vibrancy. Our GCSE students love them.

Also Muji pens are really popular too especially if your godson enjoys pen and ink drawing, journaling etc as they have a very fine point (0.38, 0.5 & 0.7) in loads of colours too.

Sketchbooks from Pink Pig are great quality too.

If he enjoys using clay, then Amazon sell all the tools and kit etc for him to practice at home, and maybe he could fire his creations in the school kiln?

Hope this gives you some inspiration!

Blinkingbatshit · 27/03/2022 16:51

Thank you all! The muji pens and a sketch book could be good….I’m looking to spend up to £30 so if there are any other ideas please do share, thanks!!

He likes posh acrylic paints but I gave him them last time!

Posh paint brushes

HobbyCraft or WHSmiths vouchers.

I used to go through pastels, cartridge paper, pencils, charcoal, oils etc, and vouchers were always welcome.

Have a look at back subscription boxes from Scawlr for £5.
Good for inspiring artists, and good value with quality brands.

Scout2016 · 27/03/2022 18:07

I was going to suggest Scrawlr too. I've bought from them before and had decent things and a chance to try something new without big expense.

Scout2016 · 27/03/2022 18:11

My friend likes architecture and I got him a Pevsner guide to the city he lives in - he seemed really chuffed with it but I dunno if they would be too basic for someone who studied architecture.

I did a colouring in degree and I loved this type of pen - I had an much more expensive version but looked exactly like this and great for blending.
