Baby not walking or talking 14mo

Just that really- is this normal?

She cruises v confidently and fast, striding along the sofa and rises/lowers into a squat with lots of control. She has very occasionally briefly stood unaided and wobbled for a few seconds.

Verbally she makes dadada mamama and nonono noises at the appropriate times but she hasn’t got any words beyond that and they’re still a babbled stream not formed words.

Obviously I’ll call the HV on Monday but I’ve just checked the nhs and am now a bit worried so please tell me if this is within the usual range or at least prepare me if it’s going to be v bad news… we have two older ones (9 and 7) who hit all their milestones pretty much fine so worried it’s because she’s the smallest :(

That actually sounds quite normal. My son 16 months before he got up the courage to let go and walk without holding anything. She seems like she's shaping words with mama and dada

Thank you @Georgeskitchen I suppose it’s more the does b I was worried about as I can see progress on the mobility front but she’s really not very adventurous verbally

My son was 16 months and 1 day before he walked. He talks loads now at 2...I know it's hard not to worry but you shouldn't :-)

miltonj · 26/03/2022 17:49

Sounds very normal to me!

Dillydollydingdong · 26/03/2022 17:51

Absolutely no problem at all. My niece was 17 months before she walked. My grandson was nearing 4 before he talked. He's 9 now, and doesn't stop talking.

StrawberrySanta · 26/03/2022 17:52

That sounds normal to me. My first DC didn't walk til 17 months. My youngest is 14mo and he is walking a bit (50/50 crawling and walking) but words wise, he says car and yeah. I think that's it, they're all different. Call HV if worried but try not to worry

grey12 · 26/03/2022 17:53

In my country they say walk at 1 talk at 2. But that's VERY general.

Kids do it at their own pace.... DD1 started walking at 9months and talking at 3 years!!!! Apparently until 5 is considered normal 🤷🏻‍♀️ talk to them, point at your lips when teaching words, read a lot, play on the floor with them

BertieBotts · 26/03/2022 17:58

Yes it's very normal.

People have this idea that babies will be walking and talking by their first birthday but that's actually on the early side for both milestones.

Children are expected to be mobile (crawling, cruising, rolling or shuffling!) by 12mo but walking unaided can be any time up to 18 months before it's considered delayed.

Children are expected to be babbling at 12 months (combining vowel and consonant sounds, as in bababa gagagaga mamamama etc) and should understand some words, but producing their own words is not a 12 month milestone. They should be doing this by 18 months.

Obviously some babies say their first word or walk before 12 months but they are the exception not the norm :)

AliceW89 · 26/03/2022 17:59

Sounds identical to my DS at 14 months.

At 22 months he’s running and talking in 3-4 word sentences.

doadeer · 26/03/2022 18:01

It's too young to say if there are issues. Your HV likely wouldn't really bother with concerns until your child is 2. Try not to worry

5thnonblonde · 26/03/2022 18:01

Thankyou all- feeling calmer! I should say she doesn’t stop smiling and laughing, if she is ‘behind’ she’s very happy there :)

Her first word was Nonono which she gleefully says as she touches shoes and other forbidden things…

I'm a Speech Therapist. I look for words by 18m. She sounds similar to my DD when she was 14m. She walked at 15m and her talking really took off at 21m (she was using words before then but not loads). She is 6 now and barely stops talking to draw breath Grin

Rrrob · 26/03/2022 18:47

Normal. DTs just walked at 14 months. DT1 didn’t say anything apart from mama and dada for months after. Now 23 months and he’s v chatty.

5thnonblonde · 26/03/2022 20:16

Thanks all- I’ll probably still call the HV as our 1 year check up was just over the phone but it’s helpful to know they can’t really do much and reassuring to know she’s probably fine. Guess I should try and channel a bit more of her chilled out vibe Grin

I suppose with the older 2 I had ante natal group pals with similarly aged kids to compare notes to- with the age gap I don’t have so many of those really closely matched in age peers
