Literally just watched season 2 episode. We said it's all become very hurty heady!

knittingaddict · 25/03/2022 20:13

Never watched Star Trek?

pointythings · 25/03/2022 20:14

Season 1 or 2?

Season 1 is about the acceptance of artificial life forms as sentient beings whose value is equal to that of other sentient species. If you look back at Star Trek, there is a recurring theme of people who have been genetically altered being treated as outcasts; this is an extension of that. There were also several episodes of TNG exploring Data and his striving to be human. Ultimately the question that the show is trying to answer is how do we define life, and how do we treat life when it is other than ours? If you go a step further then Star Trek and its spin-offs have a lot to say about othering people and that it isn't a good idea.

I haven't watched enough of Picard Season 2 to analyse it yet.

Think it’s season two - the new one? My partner is a ST fan, but I have never watched any of this before. I’m quite liking it but defo not getting it yet!

Watch season 1 first??
Watch a few next generation episodes if you’re really wanting to go for it!
I love Star Trek.
Quite enjoyed Picard season 1. Not seen any of season 2 yet.

pointythings · 25/03/2022 20:32

I think starting off with Season 2 and without having watched any ST at all is going to make things really difficult, but kudos for giving it a shot!

Lennybenny · 25/03/2022 20:34

You can't watch s2 without watching s1. You don't know who all the characters are.

Someone got upset and blew everyone to bits....Q popped up just before they died and put Picard and all the main characters into a new timeline.

chocolateisavegetable · 26/03/2022 20:07

I am absolutely loving it, but then I am a massive Star Trek fan! Today's episode certainly won't make sense if you haven't seen Next Generation

Rowgtfc72 · 26/03/2022 21:00

Got to be honest we put off watching this.
Season 1 took a bit of getting used to but absolutely loved seeing some old faces!
Never like Q as a character and I think yesterday's episode was a bit confusing but it's still a good watch.

pointythings · 27/03/2022 22:03

I'm enjoying the season so far and the focus on fascism is extremely topical, but I am annoyed that they've changed the theme tune. They've ruined it, it was beautiful!

Rowgtfc72 · 28/03/2022 07:24

Agree. Season 1 theme tune was good.

Just1moreq · 28/03/2022 07:42

S2 won't make sense without NG and s1. S1 won't make sence without NG. So, watch NG.

Picard wouldn't be himself without his relationship with the borg and with q.

BuanoKubiamVej · 28/03/2022 08:03

Picard is on a long arc story process of rehabilitating the Borg to become no longer the baddies to be feared and destroyed but instead to be perceived as a very different culture that is to be respected and understood, much as the Klingons and Romulans have been rehabilitated in previous parts of the Star Trek ouvre.

We've been started off with accepting that cybernetic life is just as much life as biological life, and we are currently focusing on how a need for community and hive mind thinking can be a valid lifestyle choice, and so long as the individual members consent and can choose to join or leave then there's nothing wrong. Parallels are being drawn with fascist regimes vs cooperative communities.

The Borg assimilate everyone because they assume that their worldview is perfect. The Federation also has a bit of a history of assuming that its own worldview is perfect despite other cultures being in disagreement about that point. If the Federation and the Borg can find a way to coexist without imposing their incompatible ideas of perfection on each other then they can start to cooperate. I suspect that there is later going to be a new threat arriving from outside the galaxy which will overwhelm both Borg and Federation unless they find that way to cooperate.

I don't think you can possibly just dip in and out without concentrating to get all this though.
